Supporter-owned clubs in England

Looks like Cellino is set to sell enough shares to Leeds supporters to make them the majority stakeholder in the club. It's a pretty big moment for supporter ownership in this country for such a thing to happen at a club that size.

So, with the phenomenon becoming increasingly common, can you envisage a day where the majority of English clubs are supporter-owned and would you ever want to see Leicester owned by the fans?

Just for you? keep dreaming pal.

True. Good point. In which case, no fan ownership. Sorry Una.

depends on the fans, col wouldn't make a good owner imo.

We won't know until he's tried, let Leeds have him.

It's probably a lot more feasible now in the premiership as TV money is starting to dwarf owner investment. I think I'd like it to happen, providing we were guaranteed to stay up, if only to protect against really bad owners like Mike Ashley etc.

Ultimately though you would still need decision makers, who would occasionally do unpopular things and make bad decisions just like any other owner. In particular, relegation would be an even more frightening prospect without deep pockets to cover the inevitable losses. In the past 15 years, we have been reliant on a wealthy backer on a few occasions (administration, league one, arguably to get into the prem), without whom it would have been curtains for the club, or at least a long spell in the lower leagues. I think I'd rather have a wealthy owner and be playing great football in the premier league, than fan owned and playing turd in league two.

The professional ranks make very difficult. Exeter for example find it really tough and their current performance or lack of success has had the clubs fanbase moaning about a lack of progress. Fanbases become very fickle - the larger they are the more difficult to manage.

I do however see it becoming the norm in non league. Your top tiers of non league will be full of supported owned clubs.

As much as I'd love to see City and other clubs owned by people with a genuine non-business based motivation, I think there'd be a lot of fallings out and a lack of investment if all clubs were to be 100% fan owned, and the clubs with the larger and more affluent fanbases would dominate as they do now.

That being said, there's a lot to be said for the 51% rule in Germany where no one person can own more than 49% of the club. That would enable the right mix of investment and supporter control with less of the squabbles that could cause problems. Portsmouth, Exeter and AFC Wimbledon are all fan owned and seem to have real problems competing on a financial level - there's little reason to think Leeds would be much different, especially seeing as they've been a financial horror story for the thick end of 15 years.

As you say, Leeds haven't been competing for years now so it's not going to make them any worse off. At least they may have some stability with that psycho no longer in control

would leeds fans still be up for fan ownership if a tycoon came in and promised to buy back their euro elite status?

Hopefully they'd have enough sense to tell them to fvck off.

Would banks lend money to a club if there wasn't a rich benefactor to guarantee the loan? Would the members be prepared to cover losses?

There's too much money in the game now, I don't think it could work.

This forum alone could show you that you can have ten fans and get ten different opinions.

" yes accept this offer. he's crap. so lazy"

" what are you talking about?!?!? best player we have ever had! should be playing for England. Don't sell"
