Phube Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 With us being the first team in 8 odd hours to score in open play against Man U yesterday, it got me thinking; when was the last open play goal against us? Must be ages ago, Southampton? If so, why has no one quoted that stat on the commentaries? Also, if we could only try and defend corners we'd be (almost) invincible!

However I think it's a fairly meaningless stat - goals count just the same from set pieces as they do from open play so unless we're never going to concede scorned again we need to improve all-round defensively. That said I don't really care if we don't improve defensively, particularly if it comes at the expense of our attack.

Improving your set piece defence shouldn't affect your attacking strenghts in fact it could add to it as per Vardy's goal yesterday.

ousefox Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 Our set piece defending is pathetic. Any team in the country could have scored that goal against us yesterday. I honestly don't know why it's so difficult. It is ridiculous the amount of set plays we concede from. It's so frustrating when we are playing as well as we are and we can't do the basics right.

Regardless of which it is, we need to take more care when it comes to conceding them by not giving away silly free kicks.

Which is why you need to be more disciplined when it comes ot giving them away. There's not always a lot you can do about corners but needless fouls can be avoided.

Clever Fox Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 I've mention it in another post but the reason we're conceding set pieces apart from KS not coming for the ball is Morgan and Huth are man marking and can't get high enough to win the ball as their too heavy and their legs are nearly gone. They need room to run and attack the ball. Which is why one should man mark and the other cover space where they can go and attack the ball. Small margins but they make a difference at times as it did yesterday.

No decent opposition on the training field

(Top obviously, but by some way I'd think)! pretty sure draws with bournemouth, southampton and united are the only times we've dropped points solely down to set piece goals. bad but not that bad probably.

Babylon Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 Yesterday was so annoying, I called the Shinji problem at the first corner as Bastian had him on toast, then again at the next. The management needed to get Shinji out of there, I wonder if we still had the analysts in the stands it might have been spotted and changed.
Guest ttfn Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 I think probably the most frustrating thing about the goals we concede from set pieces (aside from the grim predictability) is who we concede them against. This calendar year we've competed well with Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Man United and conceded goals from set pieces to all of them. Set pieces are a great opportunity for the underdog to take advantage and more often than not we concede from at least 1 against the stronger sides.
Finn Claw II Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 I can't see the height problem being addressed. Assuming we go for a new CB and RB that will only add one more tall player as either Morgan or Huth will be dropped. A tall second striker that plays most games would help. Best approach might be to get Kasper to come out more.
