Nigel De Jong

I dont think we've signed De Jong becuase hes a big name mate. Not gonna shift a load of shirts with De Jong on the back. We've signed him to replace Inler who hasn't worked as a Cambiasso replacement.

Experienced and competitive. I think it's a good move.

I really hope this isnt just a ranieri signing..... If it is, and it actively goes against Walshy's recommendation to NOT sign him, then, from walshy's point of view, whats the point in sticking around?

Posted

He would probably be given a one-year deal, with a view for another season.

He'd fit in well with how we play, but doubt he'd improve the midfield.

He'll be given at least a 1.5 year deal if not 2.5 year deal, or why would he move?

This. But I suspect CR has a lot more confidence in Walshy after the summer dealings and players we already have. Also, Cambiasso was a Walsh signing

Walsh is a head scout aswell as assistant manager. Why do people insist on labelling 'Walsh' signings or 'Ranieri' signings. There will be a committee decision on all potential signings, regardless of who suggested it.

You don't know that, also we don't know if Walsh is still assistant manager in the same capacity he was. Is he still in contact with the bench during the game like he used to be?

De Jong is not getting picked at Milan because he's been way off the pace whenever he's played. I watched them against Verona and he got sent off.

Sending off is around 2:34

To quote someone on a Milan forum "id take a chocolate panettone for de jong

4m is genius". That's pretty much the feeling here, and getting his reported 3m wages off the balance sheet would be nice too.

There ya go..an informed post.

So thanks for that.

Personally, I also think this is about considering the situation we are in.

When we signed Cambiasso last season we were new to the Premiership. And a relatively young, inexperienced squad. Like many have said (myself included), whatever people's opinions of him ON the field, having a bloke who had seen it all and done it all OFF the field must have had a dramatic impact on our squad.

But that was then. Now we are a Premiership side a year on, second in the division with players who now know the division. The same thing that Esteban brought to the club is not needed in terms of DeJong. We've got older heads in Huth, Big Wes, Wasa and the like.

We can do better now than bringing in a player who is on the downward curve of his career, whose parent club apparently want shot of.

I'd be looking for a quality midfield playmaker. Someone who can both score goals and unlock defences rather than toward another player who, to coin a phrase, has had his best years.

To be fair everytime I have seen De Jong play he has looked very lively and pretty good on the ball, this doesn't suprise me one bit that we are in for him similar to Kante.

Walsh/Owners - Okazaki

Ranieri - Benalouane

Walsh - Kante

Ranieri - Inler

Walsh - Gray

Ranieri - De Jong

If this theme is true, Ranieri's targets should only be signed on Walsh's approval. Inler and De Jong at this stage in their careers aren't needed, we don't need big name players for the sake of it if they're not going to improve us.

Ahh that's good then at least it's a Walsh signing next!

The point of Walsh's title is not the prevalent point. Nor what his role is on a match day. My point is that it seems that people on here appear to indicate that there is some divide in recruitment policy! - based on what? Why would you want this? How do you know this?

Because Ranieri has admitted he needed convincing about Kante = lack of trust. Because the press have said Benalouanne was a Ranieri pick.... because we're suddenly linked with every Tom, Dick and Harry from Italy for ridiculous fees, seemingly based on 5 games.

An informed post? Quoting a few people from another forum and watching one game = an informed post? Or do you just think that because it's saying what you want to hear?

We want experience, we don't have any much in the middle. If you want experience in it's prime it's going to cost you a bloody fortune. We don't have experience at a top level in that position, it's quite simple. You can go on about experienced centre backs all you want, they aren't midfielders.

Why does it matter whether Walsh flags up a youngster with potential or Ranieri can attract a player he has links with? Surely the combination of multiple approaches is a good thing. Also, if you believe everything the press say, you'll know Cambiasso was a Walsh signing not Pearson, yet we know Pearson convinced him. Why does it matter? Are you suggesting they are ignoring each other's suggested targets?

In my defence, I live in Milan, talk to Milan fans and watch them quite a bit.

I live in Leicester, talk to Leicester fans who watch EVERY game.... and still disagree with most of their views. :D

Don't take it personally, I'm aiming it Mr "I'm always right".

Why don't we/can't we pay a 'bloody fortune'? Assuming we'd have to which is an assumption on your part I'm guessing?

We are pushing to play in the Champions League, the TV revenue money is immense and we can't be short of funds?

Why not pay the right money for the right player?

Regarding an 'informed post'...I found it far more informative than your conjecture. And it ties - in with what I've read too.

Listen..if we go on to sign DeJong and he's great then, great.

Personally I now think we could and should do better. Pretty much all I'm saying.

We're not going to get someone currently at their peak, with experience at the very highest level I'm talking top international, winning leagues and tournaments been there got the t-shirt players... the ones we've actively targeted.

Even if we wanted to spunk £25/30m on said player, they aren't going to leave their club if they are in their prime to come here... because they'll already be at a club better than us. We're not that club, not many outside the top 5 clubs in this league (and I'm not talking league position) can go out and pay for, whilst also attracting those players.

The other option is you get an up and coming player, without experience. Something, which we already have plenty of at this moment in time. In another year or two, our inexperienced players become experienced and we'll look for someone younger again. Or if we decide King or James aren't good enough we'll go for another younger player.

It's not conjecture to say a) we lack experience in the middle and that b) Milan have quite a few older players in the middle already. It's a fact.

We're not just trying to sign a load of old players, we're keeping a healthy mix. If we were just going for this type of player I'd be going nuts. But we aren't, we're going for people like Kante, and Gray as well.  It's about balance, that's why we now need a younger centre back as we have a lot of older players in that area already.

Eventually we will hopefully have our own experienced players here after they grow with us at this level, rather than importing them. But they play an important role at the club as I've been through before with you.

Fair play. That makes sense. Good post.

I'm really not bothered either way. I just don't want to be saddled with a player past his best on biggish money when we are vying for the promised land. But as you say, it could well work in our favour.

I understand the hesitence, but i'm confident that if we land De Jong, he will have a much bigger impact and inclusion than Inler.

It's a risk, it always is... but if we've identified experience as being essential in that area I think it's a risk worth taking. As you said before, the money is huge so it's really a drop in the ocean.

He's younger than Huth and we spent a few bob on him as we knew his experience was essential for us. I don't see it as being any different to that.
