Tony Cozier has passed away aged 75.

One of the most distinctive voices in the game, excellent broadcaster. RIP Tony.

Very sad about Tony Cozier. Great writer, commentator and authority on Caribbean cricket. A man who took you aback when you actually saw what he looked like compared to what you imagined on the radio though.  lol

Woo hoo test cricket is back... sorry what? Inaugral super series? 4 pts  for a test win?

Not impressed, they are different disciplines with different players, it is like having a England versus Germany super series, play 3 11 a-side matches, 5 5 a-side matches  and a game of table football.

If you are going to do this you don't play the tests upfront you win all 3 tests the rest become irrelevant, if you are going to use this format, then I would have it ODI, TEST, ODI, TEST, ODI, TEST, ODI then a T20 for 1 point at the end if it is a tie. Or start with a T20, whoever wins that gets the Toss in the first test...

To be honest they shouldn't do anything, you can't have an Ashes series in this format.

Well not sure what's going on here.  England giving wickets away to an average bowler, it's like the 1990's all over again.

And on that note.

Things can only get better.

BBC live feed describing Shanaka as a "Sri Lankan Mark Ealham" who bowls like a club cricketer. Not good. Hope Vince can rise above it and show a bit of class on debut here.

Turgid stuff, some poor shots this morning.

Still think our bowlers will romp through this Sri Lankan batting line up though.

5 down, our batting line up looks very hit and miss to me, especially if root doesn't make a score. Ironically Hales is showing the way in these conditions.

I think they need to give it a go and see how the points system plays out. There seems to have be a lot of dead rubber matches in recent years and it should at least make them a bit more interesting. The problem we have over here compared to other places around the world is that we don't see one dayers as being very important compared to tests and whilst we have seen the team improve in that area in recent years the South Africa experience was a classic example - win the tests don't go as hard in the others. Also those one off 20/20s are almost pointless beyond the spectacle of the game itself.

The points system is a joke, the Test series is what is important.

The ODI's are good for a laugh but only serious when it's a major tournament.

It may well prove not to work. But we have to realise that increasingly around the world other countries don't think the same as we do about the relationship between one day cricket and the tests. The IPL is showing that, as is the fact the Eden gardens will have 70,000 people in it for a one dayer and 7,000 in it for a test match. Rather than undermining test cricket a points system could make some nations take it more seriously.

I'm not a traditionalist in many areas, but in this...

Let the other countries and the ridiculously commercialised thwackfest that is the IPL do as they wish. Test cricket will always be the purest form of the game and the truest measure of the ability of a cricketer. Popularity shouldn't come into it.

If anything, dump the 50-over format and make the series between nations Tests and T20's only. That way you get the added revenue from the thrashfest and the truer measure of ability of the Tests.

Terrific to finally see Bairstow fulfilling his potential.

Agreed. I'm having doubts about Moeen now. No doubt we'll need him for the winter tours but if we're only going to pick one spinner in the future and he can't contribute with the bat, we may as well go for Rashid as he's better with ball in hand.

Is there honestly anything worse than watching Finny bat?

I dunno, he's doing his job holding up one end and then letting Bairstow make hay at the other end.

To be fair that whipped leg glance for four a few minutes ago was absolutely glorious.

Finn could actually do a job with the bat if he put his mind to it. You're clearly no mug if you've got a Test 50 to your name.

Great work from Bairstow, hope he carries that form through the summer now. No reason why he can't.

Good total in the end that.

We should have a first innings lead.

We have the best opening partnership in the World bowling, take wickets every single time they bowl.
