Footballer nicknames

Player nicknames are very much a thing in Spanish-speaking countries and other places, but they seem to have all but died in the English-speaking world. It wasn't too long ago when "Duncan Disorderly" Ferguson, Ray "the Romford Pelé" Parlour, David "Calamity" James and others were kicking about, but now, it's all "Vards," "Huthy," etc.

Off the top of my head, Vardy's the only City player that has a nickname ("Cannon") that's not just dressing room speak, but that doesn't seem to get used often. How does Danny "Drinky" Drinkwater not have an epic nickname (unless the "English Pirlo" tag courtesy of Christian Fuchs sticks)?

Sebastian Giovinco is "formiga atomica (Atom Ant)," Gary Medel is known as "El Pitbull," but Andy King is... Kingy.

Are there any English nicknames on the squad or in the Premier League that I'm missing? What would you suggest as nicknames for players? Kasper Schmeichel could be "The Friendly Ghost," but that might not be such a good thing for a keeper..

Can't think of any existing ones, but a few ideas....

Once upon a time, every star player was "the Maradona of [place they came from]": Hagi was "the Maradona of the Carpathians" etc., so....

- Mahrez could be "the Maradona of the Atlas", especially as he's really French. Or how about "Gas" for the way he drifts past defenders?

- Vardy could be "the Maradona of Melton Mowbray" (he lives there doesn't he?)

- "Duracell" for Kante

- "Gormless" for Albrighton or Schlupp (interviews and playing style, respectively)

- "Rummer" for Wes (Captain Morgan & drink-driving habits)

- "Inca" or "Chief" for Ulloa (he has a very native American look)

- "El Pitbull" could've been appropriated for Paul Gallagher, given how much he loved a tackle

I read that Simpson is doing his community service as a bingo caller, so there must be mileage in that: "Curlers"? (as in putting your curlers in to go to the bingo)

- "Shrek" for Rooney (when Man Utd were in the Champions League final in Moscow, I remember them interviewing local youths and one saying, in broken English, "we all love Rooney because he looks like Shrek")

- "Clare" for Yaya Toure (as in: Clare Grogan, singer of Altered Images, famous for their song "Happy Birthday"; Yaya famous for his lack of birthday cake) - the idea of calling a unit like Yaya "Clare" amuses me, but I'm very childish

- "Bono" for Joey Barton, given his ego and love for being quoted in the media

- "Chippendale" for Giroud, as he's No. 1 pin-up for the (heterosexual) ladies, apparently

- "Sunbed" for Eden Hazard, given his attitude this season

- "Dandruff" for Joe Hart

- "Pukka" for Conrad Logan (who ate all the pies)

I was known as the Maradona of the fens. Magic left foot and slight paunch.

I always assumed that was because you snorted lots of coke and kept shooting guns at people?

When I was at Hinckley one of the first team players nickname was 'thimble'. Had no idea why until I saw him in the shower after training.

It must be tough everytime you looked at yourself in the mirror in the changing room then.

I live in Downham. Do you still live there?

I remember you saying once. I lived in Lynn for most of my youth. I'll be there for a couple of weeks this month if you know a pub showing football.

Could hear Vardy yelling to 'Sharky' after when celebrating with the fans.

Oh okay, I was wondering who he was calling. Sounded kind of like "Jockey" it the time, but that makes sense.

Always liked the simple nickname of 'Chris' for Kiki Musampe. Special mentions to One Size (Fitz Hall) and Gilles (Bob) De Bilde.
