They're so clever !

Headline in the Mercury today.  CR says the reason we are doing so well is that 'the players are so clever'.

Interesting.  We all know the team has amazing energy and pace but CR thinks the cleverness IS the reason we are doing well.   Thinking back maybe there are some players not currently in the team that aren't 'clever' and this has a bearing on our league position.   Two players I've always liked RDL and Jeff ....    were they clever ? ....   Was Krammy clever ? ...   or Inler ? .....   Or even Liam Moore ? .....    anyone else ?        Makes you think.

Dunno about 'clever' but Huth has played a massive part in Morgan becoming better as a player. Don't underestimate that.

His word not mine.   But yes you are right about that one.

Clever can mean a whole host of different things.

Are we talking IQ? Or is Ranieri referring to their individual footballing knowledge? Or is it a 'collective' cleverness? Or is the 'cleverness' he's referring to the extent to which the players understand what is required of them (on the pitch, at training, in their diets etc.)?

It's such a vague statement its pointless speculating on it too much, and it's even more pointless trying to point the finger at certain players. Stop stirring.

Im not stirring for one minute ...   I was just intrigued by his comments and it made me think who it might apply to.   As to exactly what he means ..   who knows but he has said it.

Not only can clever mean a lot of different things, with English not being Claudio's first language, it may not even be the EXACT word he meant.

In his interview for the Telegraph, he inferred that the players didn't fancy learning to play the Italian ay, so he set about teaching them how to play THEIR way better.

Sorry I don't know how to link it so you can read it ...   if someone does though.  But he goes into detail about what he means and there is no ambiguity due to language ...   "You can be a fantastic player but a stupid man, and you cannot improve.  I have very intelligent players".

Having people who can defend around him means he can concentrate on his job. If you look back to last season he was so often stretched as he was trying to do everything on his own half the time. With attacking full backs he'd get pulled out of the centre as he'd have to cover behind them... now him and Huth can stay pretty central and just cover their area.

They're intelligent modern footballs, they know their role and responsibilities, they know their limitations, they look after their fitness and their discipline is good.

I take it to mean that they understand football, its systems, positonal requirements, when to pick a pass etc., and how to actually play the game. Also they seem to have the ability to take on board and implement new ideas and share the same vision.

You don't have to academically "clever" to have a football brain. Many players in football were probably not considered to be top of the class when at school, but excel at understanding and playing football. Probably lucky for them and us that they have this talent.

Ranieri had a fox "cleverness" long before he joined Leicester. ..in my opinion "clever" in this context should be taken with a pinch of humor and let to opponents to try to understand what he meant.

Huths reading of the game is the best in this team..

He isn't talking about overall intelligence and because he is italian maybe it is a misinterpretation but i think he means that they all click together and have great football intelligence having played together so long they are a unit where everyone understands their job and place in the team

Incidentally, I just read a snippet in one of the paper supplements of an interview which Kasper answering the 'Who's the most intelligent squad member?'. He said something along the lines of 'definitely not Vards, probably Inler'.

We do have a very intelligent squad, I very rarely find myself watching a game and think "why the hell did he do that?" or "Why didn't he do that".

Whereas when I watch most games, most teams seem to be made up of robotic players that have been told how to play and don't deviate from that, even if there is a chance to gain an advantage from doing something differently.
