I've been robbed!

Just had a chat with my bank as there were some unusual online spends including £250 from Ocada, £600+ for wine and one other I can't recall how much all in the last few days.

Fortunately they were items I've never bought online or in those quantities.

Someone has obviously got hold my card details including the number, name and security code. They didn't have to use my pin number.

Now I do fair bit of shopping online but mostly to well known companies like Amazon, Ebay but always use my credit card or paypal. I obviously use it in card readers in shops as well.

The bank don't seem to have much of clue how they did it but are sending me a new card and have reimbursed me.

Anyone else had this and have any idea how it could have happened?

Not yet. Although I went to use mine yesterday and could not find it. I had not put it back in my wallet so was loose in my pocket. Luckily I have a spare one with the security number faded and can get cashback if I do not have to enter a pin. Will go in the bank today to cancel and order another. Lost it before and found it under my chair after a couple of days and prev looking there.

I would imagine you've had your card cloned at a cashpoint.

When you go to a cashpoint run your hand across the ceiling of the machine for a camera, then get a hold of the edges round the card entry slot to make sure a 'reader' has not been put in in its place. if it wobbles a lot or you can pull it out, do so. You'll promptly be followed by gentleman who will appear from nowhere requesting it back. If you fancy a fight, drop it on the floor and stamp on it a bit - worked for me.

Would card cloning work with online shopping? I thought the card cloning would copy the magnetic strip, but you need the pin number for that to work.

With Ocado and most online shopping sites you have the card verification stage, but if you have never used that card before online it might not be set-up.

You had any emails that looked like they were from ebay and amazon etc. Asking you to click a link and re enter your card details, or another similar request.

Used any cash machines you wouldn't normally use?

Used a petrol station or small store you perhaps don't normally use?

I haven't used a cash point for years, if I want cash I usually use cashback at a supermarket

Don't ever use your card to buy things in small corner shops, always pay for stuff in cash at places like that.

Also be extremely wary of using cash machines that are in quiet areas.

Thieves have a number of ways of getting your bank details, these two are by far the most common.

The problem is many shops abroad don't ask for security numbers or verification or anything.

What you should really do is ring your bank, and tell them not to authorise any transactions that are not made in the UK.

what bank are you with? pretty good they paid you back this quick

I'd guess contactless or cashpoint cloning, request a non contactless card if you can

No, No and have used a Sainsbury's local a few times other than that no.

I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago, someone spent £600 on one way flights with Monarch from Lithuania to England. I called monarch customer services to cancel the flights and get a refund, but they refused to do anything without the booking reference (which obviously i didn't have, as i didn't book the flights myself). It was very frustrating because with the bank details i gave them, they could clearly see the booking so they had the name and address of the person responsible, as they had to send the flight tickets out to them.

Luckily the bank were on my side and they refunded the money in full. I haven't flown with monarch again since the incident, i refuse to on principal. And i've always had a bit of resentment towards Simonas Stankevicious since then!

Come to think of it, he joined our youth team around the same time....

Have you bought anything online from a not so well known site? Im always a bit wary of aliexpress or eBay. The firm might be okay but the people who sell through might be dodgy.

do a complete virus scan and malware scan on your computer. if you use chrome check your saved passwords and cards.

someone has got your payment details from somewhere. go through your statement and see if there is a place you have used that was new before the pish took place.

hold up. ocado is a shopping delivery service? if you ring them they should be able to tell you where its gone?

I think DavieG needs to ask his Mrs or the Mistress about this one!!

I did think this and assume the banks fraud team  would follow it up.

I guess they're tight lipped about these events as it's not good news for them or for they're  customers to be reminded  of how vulnerable we all are.

Ticket machines at railway stations, car parks or even self service tills in shops have been known to have skimming devices attached to them as well

The Mrs  prefers using cash and wouldn't buy food online if it was half price, I've given the mistress her own card and she doesn't  cook and always eats out.

Are there not lawyers holding money between client accounts? Should be easy to track chits and SWIFT receipts.
