Why we will never be a Nottingham Forest

The people up the road at Nottingham had some great times under Brian Clough in 1977-80 having assembled an expensive group of players; O'Neil, Shilton, Keane, Gemill. It still reads like a whos who of 1970's football. They broke transfer records, Trevor Francis was the first £1mn player with the record set by Nottingham Forest. All this shows why the LC success last season was all the more remarkable but also the transfer goings on this summer also highlights the differences. NF were a buying club we don't seem to be able to buy at the level we are now trying to and need to be able to buy with a couple of failed bids already reported.

The current EPL transfer record is just North of £60mn, I could never imagine LC ever setting a new EPL transfer record as Notts Forest did in their day. Our current club record stands much closer to £10mn. When Notts Forest were busy buying up the best players in the land all of our best players are being told they should run at the first and likely only opportunity to leave the Champions to join elite clubs.

At the end of the day, the NF era was down in no small part to the money and today nothing seems to have changed. If the team that turns out for the Community Shield game is unrecognisable from the one that won the EPL then we will know last season was indeed a freak season and normality has returned. There is no place for romance in the business of football.

We will never be a Nottingham Forest because we will never go down to their level. Our achievement surpassed theirs and we are now bigger and better in every sense.

They won the European Cup like.

Shit like this makes us look small and bitter. Why are we even comparing?

Were you away for the 2008 - 9 season?

I'm not sure what people's problem is with this, the two league wins are very similar and both miraculous achievements. The European cup doesn't exist anymore so that's the end of it. Why try to rubbish what they did, it was still football, played by 22 players.

Especially seeing my post is more to compare the relative transfer market activity of two successful teams. NF were a lead buying club in their great years, seems we are predestined to be a lead selling club in our great year(s).

I think both achievements were outstanding and it's something both clubs will have forever. Although cliched, both successes were in a different era of football, so for me I'm happy to accept Forest and Leicester have their names proudly in the books of English football history.

They did amazing in an era where it didn't really pay and as such the rewards soon ran dry

Clough was a genius and his Legend lives on

Let's be honest they are at the same level they were at before he came along but I think its embarrassing people decrying what they achieved

I seem to remember us breaking the transfer record when we bought Alan Clarke  not that it did us much good.

They may not have gone straight away but they lost a few yo the likes of Arsenal, Woodcock, Man U, Anderson to name but two.

I meant from now on we will never go down to their level. I couldn't give 2 shits about Forest. Imo our achievement and the way we competed against the rich elite surpasses their achievements (which were also fantastic achievements I might add, Clough was a genius).

It's not like i'm going to compare each achievement and fight our corner. I'm not interested. It's a pointless argument anyway as they were in different times so cant be truly compared but on the face of it for me i'm more impressed with what we did.

I agree.

What Clough and Taylor did for both Derby and Forest was a terrific achievement. As you say, they are now both at the same level as they were before he came, although I'd be surprised if Derby don't get promoted next season with NP there.

I don't loathe either team as much as I do clubs from London. They really get my goat, the way the media big them up all the time and how wonderful they are. It was truly great to beat them all last season, and I'm pleased when either Derby or Forest beat any of them too.

I must admit beating West Ham/ Spurs or Chelsea is more satisfying than any East Midlands result

Now a days beating Derby or forest would feel like battering your little brother , slightly satisfying but not the same glow as when you spark out the playground bully !

We are huge now :)

That's the point it's not something that can truely compared ! They have thier little piece of history and so now do we

Happy days

The whole comparison is so tedious now. What they did was incredible, but half the gimps that bang on about it weren't even alive to see it. Instead they've got vivid memories of Nathan Tyson and Marcus Tudgay.

Different era's so there's no comparison. If you bring up comparisons to Forest then you need to talk about Huddersfield and Ipswich too.

They were very lucky to stumble upon a genius. What Clough achieved was unbelievable and for me he's the greatest manager ever. Should have got the England job - we'd have won something under him.

Yeah in the 70s. Doesn't even remotely compare to what we've done.
