DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 I still believe we will sign a couple more decent quality players, and I mean, quality, but they will have to suit our style.

SheppyFox Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 Am I correct in thinking, purely in terms of squad depth we are only two out field players bigger so far? Purely numerical terms. I know we've signed more than that but we've lost one or two as well? Surely to God for numbers alone we need more quality in depth??

SheppyFox Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 Dyers back to Swansea too, so we've only added one outfield player speaking strictly in numerical terms? It's madness to suggest we don't need more signing!

The thing is if we don't get injuries and suspensions again like last season there is still going to be a lot of players in the squad barely playing. Yes, we'll have to rotate a bit but there won't be loads of changes every week so the need for more numbers isn't strictly true.

The difference between this season and last though is we all knew what 11 we're starting baring injury with this season coming up can we really name our starting 11 with the players we've signed and the improvement of chilwell and Gray.

We won the league by 10 points, going away for the summer shouldn't have suddenly made our team or squad weak or uncertain. Ok, Chelsea bombed last season but there's no reason why we can't compete in the top 6 again with pretty much the same team as last season. Kante is a huge loss and it's tinkering with the team to make us defensively sound and lethal in attack again. I think because the signings we've made so far are not guaranteed starters it makes it quite easy to see what our best XI will be to start with and it'll be very similar to last season.
ARM1968 Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 Two more for me. Proper cm or dm and a striker. Got the money, got the light, get Lacazette in for starters.

Why don't people understand that standing still, automatically means you're going backwards. Spurs have improved the squad, so have United, Man City, Chelsea.....We have made ours, arguably slightly stronger in depth, but our starting XI is weaker. If there's no reason we can't compete in the top 6.....there is also no reason we can't, as you put it, 'bomb'.

ARM1968 Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 Whilst true Babylonian it is also true that 'on paper' they are stronger. Games aren't won on paper granted but the new signings will undoubtedly be expected to strengthen those sides not weaken them.

Apologies for not being clear, I'm talking about him saying our starting 11 is weaker... I meant he hasn't seen a single one of our new players play a competitive game yet.

It is just simple maths. If a side like spurs, retain their players, and sign another, it has more depth, and therefore is a stronger squad.

I'm not saying that at all, but we didn't on paper look to have strengthened that much last summer and other clubs such as United, Man City and Chelsea were signing all and sundry and guess what. We won the league by a country mile. I can almost guarantee that last summer you'd have been doing your bollocks on here about how we're doomed. Signing players for the sake of it doesn't make you any more likely to improve. You can improve in other ways and being selective in who you sign isn't a bad thing. We still could do with 1-2 that could replace the likes of Ulloa/Okazaki or another defender but I don't think we've automatically gone backwards at all except for losing Kante is a huge blow.

It's a big if though buddy, not to mention the risk is increased with every new fixture.

He is a 'known' unlike Kante, yet a top side hasn't deemed him as good enough, so i can't see him being as effective as N'golo unfortunately.
ARM1968 Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 I get yer Babs, rubbish post that confused people. without Kante we are considerably weaker and I doubt many realise just how great his impact was. To to my mind we have not replaced him even slightly.

It's not though, we've only got room for about 2 more players anyway in a 25 man squad? Look how many players barely played last season. I still think we'll bring 1-2 in which'll be sound. If any leave other than the ones we know are going then I'm sure we'll see a few more in too.
