Guest Col city fan Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Little signs on Saturday he was learning the Premiership. Just little ones but pleasing to see. He's clearly got the athleticism, now he needs the savvy. That might just come.
Nalis Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 The warning signs where there when he was signed as a utility player which everyone knows is code for not very good in any particular position.
RumbleFox Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 It is nice to see some well reasoned discussion on Mr Amartey. I know some people will respond with "this is a forum and we are allowed to say what we think you happy clapper" but I honestly think some folk go a wee bit too far on here when it comes to individual abuse of a player, especially a 21 year old player. Is he amazing? No. Is he as good as Kante? No. Could we do with a better short term solution? Definitely. But for saying he was brought in as a centre back for the future, never having played in England, never mind the Premier League I think he has done OK. It is a shame he has been thrown in because it must be tough on him to handle the pressure of having to replace one of the best players in the world in a position he has never really played before. He looks like he lacks confidence to me, as someone else said, he looks like a good hug now and then would help him. Ideally I imagine he would have be brought in slowly, cameos here and there and 90 minutes in easier games but he has been thrown in and he has looked like, potentially, he could be a very good player. I think he probably needs support and encouragement in the meantime. He looks that kind of player, not much of an attitude. Like Heskey a little, you felt he played best when he felt loved. You can do it Mr Amartey, we all love you. Maybe a wee hug every ten minutes from a designated fan? Rumble. X
Vocey Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 A key thing to remember with amartey is he has gone from a Copenhagen side which we can all admit focus on the more physical side of the game, which he would flourish in, to the hardest league in the world to adapt to. Personally don't feel he has the positional sense to play in a 2 man midfield, and he never looks comfortable on the ball but he can break up play and drive forward, think a 3 man of amartey drinkwater and mendy would suit him a lot better.
Crinklyfox Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 He was brought in as a player with potential. There's no certain way of knowing if a player who looks like they can make it at the top level will definitely do so; of those that do few are instant successes, most take some time to develop their skills and know-how. We only have to look at our own team over the last few seasons. When we bought JV he struggled to adapt to the Championship in his first season, now he's playing for England. A couple of seasons ago DD wasn't holding down a regular place in the side, now he's pretty much undroppable. But in contrast there were players that didn't make the leap and ended up on the subs bench or went to other clubs. So for me Mr Amartey is a work in progress. I'm not willing to discount his value as he doesn't appear to be the finished article. IMO he's good enough for the subs bench now.
stevelcfc Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 I think this guy could do a better job at the moment.
Guest Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 for a defensive midfielder trying to fulfil a kante role because we have no other ideas....then not so great. As a defensive midfielder with his own play style - good as a midfielder who is allowed to go forward because DD is not on the pitch - very good It's time we stopped looking to replace Kante because there are not many( if any) players that can do what kante did. I loved the look of Amartey when Musa, Gray and Slimani came on the pitch in the last game....Yes he screwed up that chance for Slim but he plays some blinding balls. I don't think there is anything wrong with him or other players (lots of comments about players being championship worthy only) I think the problem is we are trying to 100% exact replicate what we did last year with a different team and wise opponents to our play style.

Guest CityFan 06 Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 He's shown glimpses of what he's capable of, through some very good performances. At the age of 21 he's still acclimatising to the league but for me certainly a bright future prospect.

Ranieri likes players that can fit in a couple of positions, and hopefully we switch formations to help midfield out. King is the more likely CM to be fighting for a bench spot. To be honest I'm not impressed with any of Ranieri's signings . A one size fits all recruitment is why we are in the state we are at the moment . I'll say yet again Amartey is not good enough at this level and will disappear without trace by this time next year .
Vardinio'sCat Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 I think he is good enough in a 3, but not in a 2. Should improve over time tho. Bit like KIng in that respect for me, but other opinions are available. Like Col, I thought he showed reasonably well on Sat, although far from perfect.
norwichfox Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 He's making progress...but he's been pushed in the deep end currently due to Drinky's stupidity. I think hell be a very good asset within a year or so
Riot Van Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 His performance away at Copenahgen was one of the most inept performances i've seen live. Although, he's a bit hit and miss really and can probably come good at some point.
sdb Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Needs to try and boss games but just seems a bit too nice at the moment. The potential to be a very good player. But also to become a scapegoat who doesn't reach his peak. Hopefully he doesn't listen to some of the fans desperate to lay blame on a 21 year old.

foxy boxing Posted 2 December 2016 Posted 2 December 2016 is it better to be a craftsmen at one skill ie a defender or midfielder or is it better to be adaptable and play in different positions and be adequate at them
Guest Col city fan Posted 2 December 2016 Posted 2 December 2016 I've decided I'm backing off a bit on Amartey. The more I think about it, the more I agree.. he's been fookin chucked in out of his depth too quickly. He should have been developed the Fergie way really. Not like he has been. Unfair on him. I still don't think his AGE is the main issue personally. It's been more about not having time to make the jump from Danish to English football.

Nice one Col, always good when folk can change their minds. How about Cambiasso.....?
Wymsey Posted 2 December 2016 Posted 2 December 2016 He's learning at his own pace. Yes, he's expected to perform well when he plays but rushing a player to learn quickly is not the answer in terms of trying to eventually reach his potential.
