Would love to know what happened to him. Disappeared off the face of the earth, yet was a great squad player, as hard as nails.

With everyone on here, couldn't we do a bit of digging and see if we can find out what happened to The Coat.

I think he will have headed back North, but I don't have a clue where.

Wheres The Coat?

Found this online from an article looking back at a Darlington match which then mentions his time at Leicester before he quit at 27 leaving a gaping hole in English football which would set the game back for years -

The injuries wouldn’t go away though. “After Wembley, I had a cyst, and my ankle kept swelling up. I had it taken out, but it still didn’t seem right. I spoke to a surgeon, who diagnosed arthritis, and he told me that if I kept on playing at a professional level, eventually I would have trouble walking. So at the age of 27, I had to call it a day, it was commonsense.”

Coatsworth went on to play for Spennymoor and Sunderland Nissan, eventually packing in altogether because he couldn’t combine his full time job at Nissan with playing football, but he left the game having given every Darlington fan the memory of his looping header.

So possibly working at Nissan. And confirmed that at Wembley he had a cyst not an assist!

His goal, against Luton I think, that about broke the net! I guess that's all I can remember him for and the Fox magazine taking the mikey for him costing a staggering £15,000.

Love the bit about telling Tommy Johnson to "f*** off"

Thanks for sharing, that's an interesting article.

As well as being a formation that had the big five defenders and big three up front it was also a line up that had never played together before. Injuries and suspensions meant we were fielding different combinations every week at that stage, Speedie suspended, Joachim only a sub and Oldfield left out (remember seeing him around  Wembley looking peeved) whilst up front Walshy defying Sports science by being able to make the pitch at all that day playing alongside the other big guys who had previously been playing instead of him whilst he was out injured. Gibson had returned for the Tranmere semi but hadn't been very involved that season yet all that muscle and physicality was too much or Derby's handpicked lambs. Whilst there were great efforts all round I think if you remove the Walshy factor in that he was superhuman that day we wouldn't have had enough without him.

I read an old article from the merc recently where they caught up with the playoff 94 squad. He retired shortly after and went to work at the Nissan factory in Sunderland. He wasn't old when he retired think it was down to injury.

I remember him scoring twice at Barnsley, his first goals for the club I believe, hated Barnsley at the time for the cup exit and David cheating git Currie.

Excellent stuff.

A sign of changed times: in the build-up to the Walsh goal, there were 2 studs-up tackles that might have brought red cards for LCFC these days.

See as you get older you tend to forget about times like these.

Nice goal though or was it a miss hit cross............... you decide

I thought he ran a pub in Broughton Astley after he played for us? Might have him mistaken for someone else though lol

Either way, famous hair cut and a no nonsense defender for us
