Why Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi is known as the 'teddy bear' by his team-mates

He might be known as 'teddy bear' by team-mates, but Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi is becoming the lionheart of Craig Shakespeare's midfield.

The 6ft 2in Nigerian has picked up the nickname because of the gentle way he takes the relentless banter from his team-mates, but on the pitch the 20-year-old displays a more aggressive approach.

Ndidi is softly-spoken and mild-mannered, but he admits English football's more physical demands have suited him to a tee.

"They call me the teddy bear because people always try to get to me and try to have fun with me," said Ndidi.

"Somebody must always do something to make others laugh and I am always the victim.

"The players have helped me on and off the pitch, but they make fun of me and play with me.

"I had to do an initiation. I had to sing a song before my debut at Everton. I can't say what the song was. I was not good at singing. I knew I didn't well."

His singing has been in contrast to his performances on the pitch, which have impressed not only Shakespeare, who admitted Lagos-born player had adapted to the Premier League quicker than he had hoped, but his team-mates too.

Ndidi admits it has always been his dream to play in the Premier League and so far life at City is living up to expectation.

"I have settled in very well," he said. "The players have given me great support, and the people I have around me.

"I have two people here who give me a lot of support. One of them is the president of the Nath Boys, where I played as a boy, who is British and he lives in London. That has made it easy for me.

"English football, apart from being aggressive and strong, there is a lot of experience and knowledge.

"You have to think about how you play. You don't get time on the ball. There is more urgency.

"I am enjoying it very much. I just try to play my game and be myself, and work hard for the team."

Teddy bear named after us president Theodore Roosevelt who did not want to shoot a chained up bear on a hunting trip.

No idea where the term Teddy boy came from any thoughts.

Ted is shorted from the edwardian style dress code the original teddy boys mimicked, i think... ( edwardian, ed, eddy = teddy boy somehow)

Sounds like a cry for help to me.

If there is a release clause in his contract, then I give up and off to support Burton.

Looks a top player already and will surely only get better!

I agree that he probably doesn't find it funny, but I don't think he'll be able to escape it no matter where he goes....

They’ll miss Wilfred Ndidi – aka the teddy bear – in Genk. A combative character on the pitch; a shy, warm and grateful personality off it.

During a team-building session an unsuspecting Ndidi once walked miles with a backpack stuffed with flowers after he left the zipper open. Behind him, all of his team-mates were laughing. For two years he had been their favourite victim but they all loved him because he was such a likable person. A charming guy who, having agreed to join Leicester City this month for £15m plus £3m in potential add-ons, leaves only good memories behind. A heart-winner, a ball-winner.

It's like at school when you'd bully the nerdy kid because he was an easy target but you needed to pass it off as banter cos you also needed him to explain half your classes to you

He should be called teddy because of the great hugs he gives to goal scorers, best hugger in the team.

Id be shooting from anywhere to get one of those hugs, yes Ndidi. lol

From the frock coats that they used to wear based on the Edwardian (Teddy) era.

A mine of useless information, me.

For example earwigs have two penises.

I've got more...

You have more than two penises? How many do you have, if you don't mind me asking?

Ha!  Very good.

Yes, I have several, I keep them in a jar under the sink, but not as many as Pochettino.  He has a collection of 22 cocks.

No, he was so traumatised he took his own life at the age of 12. That took an unexpected turn, didn't it?
