Charl91 Posted 12 April 2017 Author Posted 12 April 2017 Ok, looks like I've offended pretty much everyone. Still maintain that King should never be brought on in a Champions League game, and that Gray should defo have come on, but I'm clearly in the minority, so fair enough, I concede defeat. Phew, people getting a little emotional tonight!

Even Amartey would've been better....) and I certainly don't understand leaving Gray on the bench. Maybe it's just me though. Better go and have a lie down! King is an experienced professional and CS was naturally wanting a cool head to play positioned sensible in the middle of midfield. CS also knows him inside out and could rely on him delivering his half time instructions. Make sense now?
peterborofox Posted 12 April 2017 Posted 12 April 2017 Do think it was odd we didn't use a third sub. Even if just Amartey coming on to kill the game. Mahrez shouldn't have stayed on but think Shakespeare probably wanted to keep it at 1-0, which Gray coming on doesn't guarantee. Although thought Mahrez was a passenger.
Royston. Posted 12 April 2017 Posted 12 April 2017 The king sub to cancel out Greaseman worked. Why didn't we start like that because we certainly didn't look like trying to score for ourselves

But King offers the discipline in midfield that you need in this game and in theory is better going forward than Amartey. It was a slog of a game where it was fanciful that we'd get a goal cos of how good they are at the back. Damage limitation and 1-0 was a great result all things considered which I don't believe would have happened without that sub.
AjcW Posted 12 April 2017 Posted 12 April 2017 Probably the best tactical substitution I've seen a manager at this club make in years. It's not his fault the only person he had to bring on was poor old king who for the record did exactly what he was asked to.... just didn't pass forward, at all!!

I understand putting an extra body in the midfield, that makes perfect sense - and I agree with that! I just disagree that Andy King is the one to do it, especially in a game where we needed players with a bit of fight and physical presence.
davieG Posted 12 April 2017 Posted 12 April 2017 They've kept 15 clean sheets out of their last 17 home Euro games including the last 7 so there was hardly any chance we were going to score as you could see from the first half. As for king he closed players down and wide and as others have said allowed Nick to keep Griezman quiet. With a ref like that the last thing you should be doing is actually tackle someone because foul or not it will lead to a free kick.

That will just give the ref an excuse to penalise us not that he needed an excuse.

I'm sure I remember him making a run forward and crossing into the box? (Cross went long, picked up by Albrighton who then lost it)
sdb Posted 12 April 2017 Posted 12 April 2017 Thought the subs were good. Mahrez lucky not to be replaced by Gray but not sure how much impact he'd have had.
