A little bit of nostalgia

I have been having a bit of a clear out and came across this match day magazine from 31st January 2009 courtesy of my father-in-law.  Northampton Town away in League One.  I still can't get my head around the amazing journey we have been on and as we head into the new season, I have to pinch myself when looking back at what we have achieved and where we are now as a solid prem team, with fans arguing whether some of our players should go for 30 or 40 or 50m.  Look at where we were less than a decade ago, and look where Ron-Robert Zieler was!

We won the game 2-1 after going a goal down.  Steve Howard from the spot and Lloyd Dyer with a 73rd minute winner.

Ha brilliant! Strangely enough I enjoyed watching us in league 1, I wouldn't want to see it again ofcourse but there was a value to it. Maybe it was "we can't get any worse, no pressure boys!" lol

After all that's happened, its good to have a nostalgic view of our time in the third. Some cracking days out Northampton, Cheltenham, Stockport, Walsall, MK Dons.

Dont want it to re-occur though.

I remember losing at home to Portsmouth the year they won the league? Our fans had gone home and 20 minutes after the match had finished the away allocation was still full and still singing their hearts out - Portsmouth fans were brilliant that day. Can't for the life of me think what year it was!

The away days in League One were superb.

It was the lowest point in our history but I loved going to proper little grounds like Stockport and Cheltenham.

League 1 was great fun but the worst part was that it made some fans think that Matty Fryatt and Steve Howard were actually decent forwards.

I  ventured into one of my boxes following my recent move and came across some poor excuse of a match day programm versus Maidstone United (league cup 2nd leg).. I checked and we won 1-0 with Kitson the scorer. I think Brian Little was Manager?

Didn't we draw that game? Remember Matty Taylor equalizing for them with a screamer. Maybe it was the winner. Need to go check my 'Of Foxes and Fossils'.

As I remember it they stuffed us.

I stand corrected - they've had a couple of big wins over us I must be getting confused with... 1994 or 6 they beat us at home 3-0 and in 2010 they put 6 past us.

Always was full of admiration for their fans though on that day - they must have been happy with the point as it perhaps put them at the top of the table!

Yeah I seem to remember sitting in the family stand just above the goal with my Grandparents that game :sweating:

Saw a Fox in the park on the way over and think we were doing well until a shot just out the box I thought was Merson dinged off the post and they all went off screaming to the left, can still hear the ball glancing the inside of the post in my head. Fondly remember games against Brighton and Wimbledon at home where it was beaming sunlight in my eyes half the match.

They beat us 0-1 under Sven. Nugent scored the winner if I recall correctly @Swan Lesta

I'm sure that was the match that Nuge scored in the first few minutes and then Portsmouth spent the rest of the game time wasting. The Mercury reckoned they had wasted something mad like 19 minutes (I could be wrong on that but it was the worst I've ever seen). I thought that Cotterill was manager ??

Portsmouth: Horrible, nasty little club with an abnormally high proportion of thick chavy fans (in my experience).

Thats gotta be it, my minds playing a trick on me because I seem to remember it was 25 yards out and more to the left of goal looking from the family stand.

Maybe it was the Forest game around that time, that was a night game draw too. Seem to remember something about Steve Stone

lobbed it into the net after ricardo had flapped at a cross wasn't it? then gave it the right big un to the kop cos they booed him but I think most of them were booing ricardo lol.

How many of the players can you name? Most of them are fairly obvious but what about:

1) Top row, third from left

2) Top row, second from right

3) Middle row, second from left

4) Middle row, second from right

5) First row, first on the right

Cotterill was their manager. Think they went down that season.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was a header too.

Nugent is an example of a player I didn't like before he joined us lol

Mem'ries
Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-coloured memories
Of the way we were
