This really is captivating test match cricket, exactly the reason why the Ashes is one of the best sporting spectacles in the world.

If Root stays in, and Malan, Ali and Bairstow can bat around him, we have a real chance. Fantastic grit shown though even if we don't end up winning, nice to see a bit of fight finally.

That might be the most enthralling days play I've seen.

Bat for two sessions and we'll have about won, Australia still on top but we are right in it.

They won't get a new ball under the lights, hopefully that's going to be the clincher for us.

Bairstow in next surely as well, can't bring someone that good in at number eight.

Bairstow absolutely has to be the man to face the new ball with Root if we are going to see it off.

I fancy Woakes sticking around to see off the new ball...

...or we'll be all out before we even get to that point.

New ball is 18ish overs away I think.

Fair play to Woakes if he stays in that long.

I'm just flitting between uber positive and really negative.

We have so many issues batting we could be all out in 18 overs, but Woakes is decent with the bat, Ali and Bairstow have scored test centuries, Overton is an all rounder and top scored in the first innings, but we are so fragile and Lyon seems to have our number, and their quicks are throwing down missiles....

Really I don't know how it is going to go, if we actually have a choice between Ali or Bairstow facing the new ball then we will have done well, as we could easily by 2 or 3 wickets down by then.

Last sentence sums it up.

If Root and Bairstow are in to face the new ball they'll be about 110/120 away with 5 wickets in hand.

With Ali and Overton to come in ...

Ifs, buts and maybes but there's no way I'm missing it tonight. Gonna get in and almost go straight to bed, set my alarm for 3 and let battle commence.

The no review thing is huge tomorrow, if Lyon bowls outside the line throw the pad at it, the umpire can't guess to give it out and they can't challenge it, should be a huge weapon for our left handers.

I do think the new ball is where it will be decided, if they get a couple with that we won't get there. While Root is at the crease they all have to fight so long to stay there, he could make 180* if given the chance and give himself a career defining innings.

Huge potential for Root to put in an all time great innings. Right mentality for it too.

The new pink ball only really does a lot during dusk though so it should be easier to see off than the red ball.

It does nothing at all in the day does it? I've noticed that, Aus must be gutted they couldn't bat a couple of hours longer so they could wait until under lights to take it.

If we were facing the new ball just after tea then I think we'd have lost this test.

Not only would they have had another 40/50 more runs but this test has shown that a new ball under the lights is destructive.

This is on the verge of being an amazing sporting achievement, it's been a couple of years since I've witnessed one of those :vardy:

...but we're only halfway there yet, alarm set for 5 bells tomorrow

It still blew our batsman away in the first innings, only Stoneman went under the lights, the rest were in daylight where it doesn't do much. It doesn't need to if we're  going to bat like we did first innings.

I'm not getting my hopes up for this one.

Our own batsmen blew themselves away in that first innings.
