Tuna Posted 7 December 2017 Posted 7 December 2017 Donating 1% of salary to Juan Mata's charity. I think he's the first premier league goalkeeper to do so?

Not according to the article on the tweet. Quote Mata and Schmeichel are joined by Swansea's Alfie Mawson, Bournemouth's Charlie Daniels and Brighton's Bruno Saltor as the Premier League's representatives.
Brainy Posted 7 December 2017 Posted 7 December 2017 I think he's the first blonde haired Danish goalkeeper whos father has won an international trophy to sign up for this isn't he?
AjcW Posted 7 December 2017 Posted 7 December 2017 Great stuff Kasper I find it astounding that when Mata announced this he wasn't followed by every signle Premier League player. It's 1% I just can't get my head around someone on a Premier League wage saying no to that

I agree with this. I'm always amazed that this gets the praise and coverage it does. I don't know enough about the charity to comment on it's effectiveness (whether it's a worthy cause or not). But, the idea that a premier league footballer gives 1% of his salary away to charity and it's praised as a radical thing is pitiful in my opinion. 1%! I bet most of us give way more than that and they have a ridiculous amount of money. I just think that it should be a headline of shame if they are not giving to other charities as well "Multi-millionaire footballer only gives 1% to Charity"
StriderHiryu Posted 7 December 2017 Posted 7 December 2017 Respect! Great idea by Mata and awesome to see Kasper sign up for it. It doesn't surprise me that a LCFC player has done it, but it does surprise me that he is the first one. I could see a number of our team doing this given the fairy-tale nature of their careers.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 December 2017 Posted 7 December 2017 Do we really want our keeper to be a involved in goal charity?

Aus Fox Posted 7 December 2017 Posted 7 December 2017 Any ideas of the total salary of the whole premier league? would have to be in excess of a billion quid (without looking at any actual figures). now imagine what you could do with just 1% of that for education, homelessness, health, refugees etc. Hopefully with Kaspers influence in the dressing room we can be the first club to sign up all of its players. Maybe then the owners could match their donations... Saving the world one Fox at a time!

I definitely donate more than £52,000 a year to charity ?

That makes sense. I think they'd be better off saying, player gives 'x amount', or just player supports, than mention the 1% that's all.
Wymsey Posted 8 December 2017 Posted 8 December 2017 The charity is a great idea and can imagine Schmeichel having no second-thoughts in donating for sure, but it won't take away the fact footballers are excessively over-paid whilst over 600 million people below the international poverty line and unfortunately it's somewhat taking the gloss out of the game (alongside Murdoch/Sky etc).
