I know it has been said before, but how much easier is the black horse now without the grumpy sod of a landlord there.

The other staff are nice too. Hopefully does well over the summer with the roof terrace but I worry long-term with the success of the Castle. However, probably helps it’s an Everards pub!

The Cherry Tree is my favourite I think. One of a kind in the city.

It’s unique certainly, however after some late nights there after the salmon, it’s not my favourite. Reckon it’ll struggle when the current family leaves(not that they are), end up flats. Interior is class though, weirdly rivalled by one of the bars in the Charles Napier!

Sad news, the Tudor has been empty since 2017, not 2013 as the article states.

Spent many a happy hour (no pun intended) in this boozer, always a warm welcome for both regulars & passers by.

I made many lifelong friends here over the years, back when people used to go out & talk to each other & whoever they happened to be next to in the pub.

One of the best 'Locals' in the City for a long time, this type of pub was ubiquitous in the UK & they are closing at an alarming rate.

Opened in 1900, closed in 2017, R.I.P The Tudor.

Unfortunately, the city needs housing, desperately. There were so many great pubs around the West End and this is from someone who only go to go into the Tudor and Westcotes a handful of times because of age.

You'll be unsurprised to learn my father-in-law really rated it when I took him in.

Leicester really struggles for an old school boozer with a well-stocked beer selection.

It's either modern (bland) and crafty, old school with a decent handpull effort but lacking other interesting beers or - run of the mill altogether.

Swan and Rushes was the best example, Nottingham and Sheffield do this well.

That part of town is really nice though.

Didn’t bother in the end. Did a good crawl of Leicester but everywhere seemed to have pretty naff choices for beer.

Also bomb the Black Country for what they've done to the Salmon. Disgraceful. Landlord is shit n all.

It is. BCA want to make all the pubs look the same for a future sale of the estate , I imagine. The landlord can’t keep a pint, mine had a fairy liquid head last time I was there.

He's dogshit man. I really don't want to dig anyone out but I went in with my old man a few weeks back and he was sat on a stool by the bar watching really loud YouTube videos on his phone to the point it was genuinely distracting and annoying. Went in last Sunday and he was playing music off his phone through the pubs speakers so so loudly, Firestarter belting through your eardrums on a Sunday arvo isn't it.

Absolutely remarkable drop off since Alex left. Much as I liked him I thought Cain was shit too, he never had it to be a landlord.

Throw in the fact the decor now looks like you're walking into a ****ing lasagne and the whole experience is shit.

It’s a shame because the landlord was really good when he just worked behind the bar at the Kings Head.
Was always gonna drop off when Alex went, he was the best landlord in Leicester by a country mile. Also with Mitch(the long hair guy) going as well, it would have been difficult for Cain.
I used to really rate BCA pubs, whether it was their main ones in Birmingham or the couple in Worcester but now they all look very similar, and as a sad ticker, the beer rotation isn’t as good as it used to be.

Yep, when Alex had a line up of Mitch / Ollie / Cain it was a genuinely brilliant pub. Think your new man is discovering the difference between being a manager and a landlord personally because it's like chatting to a Ryvita with him, and that's doing a disservice to Ryvita.

The ones in Birmingham are still okay, but they're all so samey. Like you've said they're picking out a catalogue these days so any sense of trying something new is long gone. The Craven Arms up near the Mailbox was a genuine stunner before Black Country took it over, a corner pub at the top of a hill with a brilliant mix of cask and interesting keg. What they've done with that is nearly as unforgivable as the Salmon.

Black Country Ales pubs have at least 4 different clashing patterns in each of their pubs, the carpet, upholstery, wallpaper curtains etc enough to give you a fxxking headache.  Someone must have been necking acid when they put that little lot together.

Their own beer is extremely dull as well.

Some of their landlords do have decent guests and keep a good pint though.

Ryvita 🤣

Only been in the Craven Arms a couple of times, more familiar with the Wellington and Prince of Wales. They are trying to extend their estate, must have a lot of that wallpaper already bought.

Yeah it's far too much mate. I used to quite like the similarity about 8-6 years back because they at least felt a little unique in some ways. I do think Birmingham city centre has the worst good pub / people ratio in Britain though. Astonishing how crap it is given its size.

Craven Arms used to be legit man, no doubt @CosbehFox went pre BCA. Wellington I've always found the same and don't think it will ever change, just very reliable, doesn't feel like they've altered the formula there. The Jewelers Arms In the JQ used to be like walking into a carbon copy of the Salmon and had a proper Brum landlady who'd ask you "whatchyow doing opp eyurrrrr." Not been in years though, hope it's not fallen victim to the same kaleidoscopic wallpaper and carpet.
