Most Shocking Moments in Sport Channel 5

Did anyone watch this last night on Channel 5. Features the 40 most amazing stories in sport counting down from 40 to No. 1 and yes Leicester City made it into the top 3 with our 2016 title win.

My point is why would something I/we didn't expect to happen be described as "shocking".

The munich air disaster and us winning a title are not the same definition.

Brazil 1 Germany 7 must feature, surely?

We know that major surprises sometimes happen, but that was a phenomenon beyond a major surprise.

Watching the Germans score every couple of minutes against Brazil, in Brazil and in a World Cup Semi.....Really couldn't believe what was happening.

 

Sunderland 1973 and Southampton 1976 were bigger FA Cup shocks than Wimbledon or Wigan for me, with Sunderland narrowly ahead.

Wimbledon & Wigan were in the PL (though Wigan went down) and Saints had some experienced players. Sunderland were a team of solid second-tier journeymen playing ruthless, well-established top-tier title contenders.

 

Headingley 1981 must figure highly, too.

Had to remind myself of the state of play before Botham's innings & Willis' bowling spell....

- Aus 1st Innings: 401-9 dec.

- Eng 1st Innings: 174 all out....follow-on enforced

- Eng 2nd Innings: 135-7......behind by an innings & 92 runs with 3 wickets standing!

-> Botham 149 n.o; Dilley 52 at No.9;

- Eng 2nd Innings: 356 all out....still leaving Australia only needing 129 to win

-> Willis 8 for 43, Aussies 111 all out, England win by 18 runs

 

It's bollocks to includes events like Munich. How can you mix Munich up with LCFC 2016, but not include Hillsborough or Heysel?

If you include external human disasters as "shocking moments in sport", you'd just end up with a list of disasters....and a pretty depressing programme.

Cantona's kung-fu kick or Tyson's ear-chewing....fair enough, shocking incidents that were part of the sporting action.

 

LCFC 2016: Not sure I properly appreciated just how big a shock this was at the time. It coincided with the deaths of both my parents, which was a bit of an emotional distraction, to say the least.

Still unbelievable to think that my parents died 19 months apart....my Mum when we were bottom of the league at Xmas; my Dad 19 months later.....3 months after we'd been crowned champions. 

Must watch the season review some time to enjoy it to the full.....though it was still pretty good at the time.

I’d swap Wimbledon with Wigan the FA Cup was so much bigger then,and Liverpool were annoyingly dominant at the time.I used to rejoice Every time they lost which was rare.
