Why don’t our goal scorers take penalties?

One of the was In the stands, the other tried a silly no look penalty because he’s thinks he’s the top boy.

Fuchs has always took a penalty for us, Maguire scored so no problem with with him and Soyuncu scored last time with his and everyone was waxing lyrical about him. Also, maybe they were the only ones that volunteered to take one. You just don’t know.

Fuchs and Maguire are great penalty takers. Thats proven. Lord Faqaard, despite scoring in the last round shouldn't have taken one. Madderz' one was dredfull. Think maybe Albrighton could've taken one (great goal from him by the way).

Albrighton bottled it most likely. Fair play for Soyuncu for stepping up.

If youve ever missed a penalty in an important (context) game youll understand why some people arent comfortable taking them.

I missed in a semi final (very Fuchsesque)... took a few years before i was game to take them again

Absoulete horse shit. You don't need to be a goalscorer to take a penalty. You need to be calm and composed.

9 times out of 10 Fuchs is.

Maguire is.

Lord Farquad deary me.

Agreed Frank Lebeouf scored an incredible 28 and missed two in his career. Julian Dicks scored 15 missed none. Baines has scored 26 missed 3 etc etc etc.

In fact I would argue that sometimes defenders make better penalty takers as they are less likely to try something flash and understand the importance of a good firm boot through the ball.

Get them to copy the Paul Gallagher method.

who was it that did that weird technique where he put the ball down turned away and came straight back and thumped it into the top corner? Waghorn was it?

Paul Gallagher.

Gallagher. He only ever smashed it, and probably had the best conversion rate of any of our regular takers in recent years

I was a shocked to see the only striker on the pitch subbed so late in the game for a defender, when it looked like penalties were coming.

Although you could put your house on him missing it in his current state, just seemed an odd move from a manager who claims to have faith in him

I imagine there's some psychological aspect to it. There'll always be exceptions, but:

Defenders are typically no-nonsense and probably see it as 'Pick a spot, leather it, and if the keeper pulls off the save then so be it'.

Attacking players tend to be 'trickier' and probably see it as 'I need to outwit the keeper here so they don't make the save'.

With the former, the keeper has to guess correctly AND pull off a fantastic save. With the latter, the keeper might be slightly less likely to guess correctly but the save is far easier to make.

I'd be interested to see some stats on penalty placement, type, player's position and penalty success rate.

yeah thats it. Don't know why I thought it was Waghorn. Gallagher scored some worldlies in his time.

Power is useless without a modicum of placement. Otherwise you're just trusting to luck. See Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle at Italia '90.

Vardz? Does the same thing every time and no keeper can stop it.

Except Mignolet.

We all knew that was gonna happen. Even the Commentator was saying before hand that Mignolet was studying Vardz PK's

Soyuncu was a striker to begin with.

He scored a great penalty before.

I can understand Soyuncu either wanting to or being asked.

What a striker!!! Why the hell aint he up front instead of the that nacho guy!!! He probably find the net more time then nacho  man :)

Defenders or not, They are all profesional footballers in one the worlds top leagues. I'm sure they should all be able to kick a ball 12 yards. It's not rocket science.

Atrocious display of how to take a penalty. All these players are of a standard to play in probably the best league in the world yet what we witnessed last night was akin to what you'd expect to see on local parks. They should all take a leaf out of Paul Gallagher's book on 'How to take a penalty' after all he seldom missed.
