Europe Travel for UK citizens after Brexit...

Recommended Posts

I thought it might be a good idea to start this topic early...

So people could post their experiences,

Up to then From end of March 2019

# Needing this year a new Passport

#Extending passport validity..8/9 years used on 10year passports..!!

#Travelling hiccups /problems with  passport control in country..xxxxxxx

known Status of this moment...

What will UK travellers to the EU have to do?

Under the Brexit deal, EU citizens and UK nationals will continue to be able to travel freely with a passport or identity card until the end of the transition period in 2020.

After this period ends, the European Commission has offered visa-free travel for UK nationals coming to the EU for a short stay, as long as the UK offers the same in return.

But although they do not need a visa, from 2021 UK nationals will need an ETIAS - deal or no deal.

The form - which the EU describes as a "necessary and small procedural step" - will take no more than 10 minutes and anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 must pay the fee, the EU says. > ca. £7-10 <

The details needed for the application form will include passport information as well as background questions about criminal records or medical conditions.

So it seems at least the next 18 months,no real headaches. Then into 2021..ETIAS forms will become the norm..!!

apparently if any major changes from the above,.. Package tours/flight will be covered under ABTA-ruling. Meaning travel-agents would be forced

to make refunds...

 the basic info!! So far.

Had an email from our fleet insurers just giving us the heads up about driving abroad if we get no deal. Green Cards from insurers and international driving permits required pretty much everywhere.

Yes the Green cards...and the IDPs, are going to be the needed Norm...For UK-European travellers.

Even ,living in Germany,I carry my Insurance Green card, when travelling /touring around the rest of Europe...

Just in case of complications, when off the beaten track..!!

IDPs,I believe you can get from the Post-office..

Lived in the Netherlands for 22 years & now I have to apply for a residency card... €300 Brexit is a shambles for everyone...might even apply for a Dutch passport..

Little England is sinking fast...

We're going to Majorca on the 18th April, so I'm a little nervous about the outcome. Nothing to do than wait and see though. As far as I can see we may need the travel documents and the driving permits, which are cheap and easy enough to obtain. When my passport is up for renewal I will be applying for an Irish one as an Irish citizen, and for my children too, if it makes things easier in the future.

If you're thinking of doing this, be aware that it can be a long process - unless you and your children are Irish born and bred, maybe? They have a big glut of Brits of Irish descent making such applications.

It took me about 3-4 months to get an Irish passport for myself, I think, but about 9 months to get one for my daughter.

I was deemed to automatically have dual citizenship as my Dad was born there, but it was a two-stage process for my daughter: applying for Irish citizenship (automatic entitlement, but time-consuming), then applying for passport.

Unless you were born in Ireland, you'll need to obtain birth and marriage certificates for your parents, too (though certificates can be obtained online within a few weeks, if you don't have access to the originals).

So, if you do this, I would do it maybe a year before your UK passport is due to expire (no problem holding both, btw - we still have valid British passports, too).

The Seaborne Ferries (they of the takeaway t&cs and no actual ferries fame) contract has been cancelled.

It's a shame really, I was looking forward to a pretty stewardess on the beach at Dover gesturing for me to simply walk into the sea when I fancy a little jaunt to France to buy some weird cheese that nobody will eat
