Nearly 3 years at it but very chuffed with how certain things look. I almost find it a bit weird that I was this big 19 year old who was overweight and underneath that actually quite muscle weak.

Now have shape to my arms and shoulders. While the legs are cooking nicely

I feel really self conscious at the gym. Not so much about my physique as I'm not in completely awful shape but more the fact I get in my head whether I'm doing the right technique with the weights and machines etc. Feel too embarrassed to ask people and they probably don't wanna be bothered as they're there to do their own workouts.

I end up just using the treadmill and the machines that have clear illustrations of what you're meant to do

If you have an idea of the machines you want to use, Google/YouTube them before/during the work out and you'll find a decent amount of videos online. I'm a fan of Jeff Nippard, but there are once again plenty of them out there.

Instagram can also be helpful, there are some decent viral PTs about, AaronMartinfit has a good series on how to use common machines well. Some gyms also have a QR code on the machine to show you how to use them too.

I use a tracking app called Hevy that has animations/instructions for the majority of exercises too. I know the gym group app has similar features, so I'm sure PureGym etc will do too.

I appreciate asking people is horrible, but the majority are generally more than happy to help. The PT's will happily show you things if you're stuck and unsure.

Always happy to answer any Q's you may have, I used to be bare anxious in the gym so do fully appreciate what you're feeling.

Someone once told me when lifting/using machines, if you’re not sure technique wise, keep everything still and straight except for the muscles/limbs that you’re using.

Been out the gym for a while with a few lower back injuries but going to get back into it with some very light sessions over the next few weeks. Started physio for my back but unfortunately won't be able to deadline or squat for quite some time. General strength and fitness is my aim after doing nothing for a few years.

I really want to strengthen my core and do some very light lower back work so that im building a foundation for when my back is a bit better. Does anyone have any ideas of things I can do at a beginner level (not been serious in the gym since covid) for core and back?

I'd definitely have a chat with your physio or find a good PT to help you sort exercises that will strengthen but takes into account your injuries.

Annoyingly Living Well at the hilton is closing down :( only a small gym with basic equipment but i enjoyed it, always a friendly atmosphere too.

Now undecided whether to join back to Brauny gym or pay through the nose and join David Lloyds at Meridian.

Anyone use David Lloyd?  I’ve seen they have a co working space and wondered if that is included in monthly fees. And is there a limit how often you can use it?

Started the gym beginning of January, lost a stone since and genuinely really enjoying it. Wish I’d got involved earlier tbqh

One of the biggest misconceptions of lifting is that it’s easier to lose weight doing that than cardio.

Just started at a gym in Desford called CJ Fitness. Really nice independent gym and cool looking too. Only takes me 10 minutes to get there from Blaby!
