Xbox or PlayStation

Looking for advice

I haven’t brought a console since buying an Xbox 360 new, is it worth buying either one? I see there is different models of each one, which model is best?
I do have a 4K tv if that makes any difference

thanks in advance

I have an Xbox One but in all honesty don't use it very much. Obviously the quality of it is excellent, would say that models are only differentiated on size and storage space, so which you buy depends on a) how many games you want to play on it and b) how often you'll be carting it about.

From personal experience, there is little difference between Xbox and PlayStation, but I think PlayStation's online function is still free, whereas Xbox Live costs around £40 a year, which I find a bit of a pain tbh.

Massively depends what games you want to play also. If you're only interested in playing arcade style games and having a bit of a laugh, you might as well stick with the 360. If you want to buy newer games it's worth getting one of the newer consoles.

If you have the budget wait for the new XBOX or PS5.

The new XBOX will be the worlds most powerful console to date.

But if any of your mates game and you want it now? That particular console they play on

Don't own either (Switch and PC master race), but imo the Playstation has the more interesting console exclusives:  Spiderman, God of War, Last of Us, Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne etc.

Xbox One offers Forza and about 10 Halo/Gears of War titles. That's not to say those aren't games that will seal it for a lot of people, if you're a big racing game fan or love your space marine shooters then the Xbox is absolutely the one to go for.

I'm less clear on the differences in online experience so I'll let those with firsthand experience advise you on that one.

If you want to play with your mates, get whatever they've got. If you're not bothered, look at the list of exclusive games for each console and see if you would prefer one over the other. Otherwise they're more or less the same.

The switch is a great option too, although a very different kind of gaming experience and the available games on the switch differs a bit more from the Xbox/Playstation.

As @Leicester_Loyal says, if you're into multiplayer, get whatever the majority of your friends have.

If you don't like multiplayer much, like me, there's an argument that the PS4 has more single player-driven games.

Either way, don't spend a fortune and don't buy new. Go on FB marketplace and you can pick a 3 or 4 year old PS4 or Xbox One for less than £100.

Then wait until Christmas and get one of the new generation.

Thank you everyone for your help, didn’t realise there was new ones coming later this year so will just get an second hand one till then

It is possible that the new generation of consoles is pushed back until next year with the current global situation.

The new Xbox may be the more powerful machine, as it is currently, but the exclusives on PS4 have wiped the floor with Xbox this generation as the 360 did with the PS3 (until the very late stage at which point it was too late for the PS3) last generation.

Although very scarce on info at the moment, I see no reason to switch back to Microsoft once the new consoles are released.

For the game devs it's a tricky one, TLOU2 and Cyberpunk may well be put on hold.  Any news on these?

Looking for a game I can get stuck into without spending too much on the PS store.

Assasins Creed Origins or Watchdogs 2?

Love Assasins Creed Black Flag but don't think I've played one since.

Get Odyssey if you can afford it. I know it's on sale at the moment, got the bundle edition for £25 last week. I've not played an AC game since Black Flag either, but Odessey is the best one since the Xbox 360 ones in my opinion. 25 hours in so far and I'm probably about a quarter of the way through, it's massive! Plus it has the pirate ship system that Black Flag had.

In terms of hours of gameplay, I platinumed Origins in around 75 hours, Watchdogs 2 in around 60 hours and Odyssey in around 95 hours.

Odyssey is the biggest game of the lot.  It'll cost more than the other two though.

I've platinumed all the AC games up to Origins but haven't played Oddessey as much - perhaps a quarter through or something.

Tbh I think these sorts of game are getting way too big. Filler for filler's sake. I struggle to stay interested.

Personally @pds if you're on a budget I'd get one of the Playstation Hits games  - the really popular games they sell for about £16 - either Spiderman which was an absolute treat and really fun, or Horizon: Zero Dawn which was open world and a change from the Ubisoft games.

I read an article in the week that Sony are struggling to keep the PS5 cool enough.  Hardware fails due to overheating which in turn is making them think about a last minute design rethink although they don't want to go the Microsoft tower route.

Pros for PS4:

- Far more quality exclusives

- Far more varied exclusives

- Bigger user base

Pros for Xbox:

- Better online functionality

- Better controller

- Games Pass (pay a small subscription to rent a large variety of games)

- Exclusives are only really Halo, Forza, Forza Horizon, and Gears of War series. All quality titles, but have been done to death for 10 years+ now

Really just go with whatever your mates have got - and if in doubt, get the PS4 because of the bigger selection of exclusives. As far as I'm aware the only game which supports cross-play (play Xbox users vs PS4 users) is the new Call of Duty

There are some good deals about - check out https://www.console-deals.com/ to compare

PS5 vs XSX will be interesting.

XSX is more powerful and should have the edge graphically. PS5 though is getting rave feedback from developers. The speed of the SSD and throughput from there appears to be a game changer for world design. The tempest 3D audio and haptics and special triggers they've using in the controllers mean they've gone for other areas of improvement (immersion and speed) which the devs are suggesting makes PS5 the better overall system.

Time will tell.

I've got my PS5 pre-order in though.

Apparently PS5 has all been built around the cooling solution so I don't think this is true. Mark Cerny said yesterday that people will be happy with their cooling solution when they do the proper reveal. I think they've learnt from PS4 sounding like a jet engine at times (bizarrely usually when in game menus rather than the games).

My pro is hideously noisy when the fans kick in. If I didn’t use noise cancelling headphones I think I’d have got rid of it by now.

My PS4 is beginning to do the same.  Original console, bought within weeks of the November launch.  Within 5 minutes of Witcher 3 running, fans are taking off.  Can't complain too much though, certainly done better than both the 360 and PS3 before it, whose disc drives were wrecked by the end of the cycle.

Thumb sticks though.  Falling to pieces.  Can't be bothered to fix them, will just wait it out until the end of the year with PS5.

My one X has been in the drawer for about a year now since I bought a Pro. But I don’t remember it being anywhere near as loud.

All of this is assuming you have no friends:

PlayStation has pretty awful UI, a horrendous controller they should have updated years ago and mine is noisier than my xbox.

But I still bought both because, as others have said, the exclusives on the PlayStation are genuinely fantastic.

If all you're going to do is play cod and fifa, get an xbox for the controller alone. If you're playing games that are on both anyway then the only real difference is your user experience and the only way that's differing is what's in your hands. If anyone tries to tell you graphics look better on one than the other or load times are better on one than the other, speaking as someone with both they're talking out their arse.

But if you like good single player games then Horizon and Last of Us alone are worth getting a PlayStation for quite frankly.

If you have friends, as others have said, get what they have.

PS: pc master race yo

Considering buying myself an Xbox one now that my son has commandeered my PS4 to play with his mates during lock down. Unfortunately seems like most places out of stock.

Uncharted Collection is now running free on PS Store until mid May during lockdown.

It's weird cos I had an xb360, moved to PS4 and think the dual shock 4 is the best controller I've ever had.

Each to their own I guess
