'Not retired' – Leicester City star explains absence of his secret weapon
The Leicester City left-back's launches into the box were utilised frequently during the Austrian's early seasons at the King Power Stadium, but have all but disappeared

Christian Fuchs’ long throws have not been placed in retirement – they’re just not suited to Leicester City’s style of play under Brendan Rodgers.

The left-back’s launches into the box were a potent weapon for City in Fuchs’ first couple of campaigns at the King Power Stadium.

They have become less frequent since, in part because Ben Chilwell has leapfrogged the Austrian in the left-back pecking order, but also because quicker throw-ins to get the game moving again are more effective for City’s current gameplan.

But, Fuchs is adamant that the days of the long throw are not totally behind him.

“Listen everyone, yes, I’m also missing my long throw-ins,” he told the club. “No, they’re not retired. I will get them out of retirement.

“The thing is, the way we are playing, we build our game on short passes, short throw-ins, taking throw-ins quickly so we don’t lose time in our build-up.

“There will be times where there will be long throw-ins again, and when they will be needed.

“But as a matter of fact, it only counts what we produce on the field, which is getting the points, getting the wins, and making you fans proud of your team.”

Unless, Fuchs shows off his throw-in power on social media, he won’t be seen winding one up anytime soon, with football on pause during the coronavirus pandemic.

The 34-year-old is in lockdown in New York with his family, but if he had to settle down to isolate with City team-mates, he would choose two title-winning colleagues.

He said: “Being in lockdown comes with challenges already, so being locked down with players…

“If I had to pick two players, I would pick two former players which are Robert Huth and Shinji Okazaki.

“Shinji because he always puts a smile on our faces, he’s got a constant smile, love him for that. He’s not a man of too many words, but a fun character.

“And Robert Huth is a fun character as well, great jokes, definitely worthwhile hanging out with him. Also, he’s not bothered about talking too much.

“So just enjoying the time with them, that would be amazing.”

Not knowing any of these guys personally, those might be the two I'd pick as well just based on how they come off.  Shinji is a given, but Huth just seems like a total bro.  Watching the players interact with their kids is always a good tell, and Huth's kids obviously adore him.

Were Fuchs long balls ever really effective. We've not had a target man since Slimani and with Vardy up front and smallish wingers we are not going to win many headers

They were effective in unsettling defences and giving them something to worry about. Would Sanchez have put his life on the line if he wasn't worried about Fuchs' throw?

In terms of goals, I feel like we got one as a direct result of a long throw in, but they were less effective than corners and corners are not very effective.

Convinced I can remember goals where the initial move started with a throw near the halfway line, and the ball was flung down the line for Vardy :dunno:

No. We scored from 1 of them ever I believe (Huth at Palace)

Pre-season against Atalanta if i recall. not a classic hurl into the box but a quickly taken long throw over the defenders straight into Vardy's path couple of touches and in the net.

I don't think long throws are particularly effective.

But then corners don't seem to be very effective for us either.  But we still like them.

It's the hope.  That something might come from it, in a few seconds.

As opposed to the crushing boredom of taking a short throw in, rolling the ball sidewards and backwards for a minute.  Then losing possession!

Can’t stand when everyone gets all built up for corners and then someone passes it short lol  Can’t remember ever seeing us pull it off

Last time it worked, it wasn't even fuchs doing it.

It was hernandez in the CL :giggle:

Sorry Christian, as much as I love the long throws, and as fun as they are....

They don't quite do the job lol

Fuchs away at Palace.

It’s funny people get wound up by short corners. Corners are scored at rate of 3.5% so it’s not like smashing the ball into a congested box is a convincing strategy.

Obviously posted by an Arsenal fan.

In order to get players get sent off, supporters should all chant 'Off, Off' a lot, so the heavily influenced refs sends the accused player off.

That should work😒👍
