This is maybe his 3rd goal conceding mistake in the past few games. It's definitely time to swap him out. Take him out the squad for a few games, start Aluko.

The penalty was massively down to him too. Telegraphing a Cruyff turn near his own box.

Being a likeable nice guy isn't what a LB needs to be, on the pitch.

He's definitely a weak link. He looks like he weighs 8 stone at best. He's not a beast like Wes or Maguire.

He might develop better awareness and positional sense as he progresses, but right now, he's not the defender we need to get us top 2. Too many errors and weaknesses.

Being decent in a training game is nothing like competing in a full on match.

MC should surely see this and I can't fathom why he keeps getting a start.

Mid-90s was Whitlow, wasn't it? Way better than Thomas. I'd have to go back to Tony Spearing, personally. And even that one is very debatable.

Luke has a good game in him here and there, and I don't doubt that he tries his heart out (which is more than you could say for some), but he looks like a lower-league player to me. No pace, no strength, no attacking threat - that tends to mean you don't get to play in the top two divisions.

Regarding that point, I know people keep saying how crap the Championship is, but I have clocked that some of the same posters thought we were way too good for this league. And we clearly aren't, so people are either underestimating the second tier or buying into the idea that price tags are a fair indicator of quality. In fairness to Cifuentes (as underwhelmed as I am by him) I don't think he can take the blame for the fact that our options at LB / CF and, in reserve, at RB, CB and CM, are below Championship level. In spite of what we paid for some of them.

I saw Marti state that younger players like Evans and Aluko need to learn to do the right things with the reserves before they're thrown in at the deep end. I see where he's coming from, but when the first choices are so consistently failing to do the right things, you have to wonder whether he's getting something wrong.

You lost me at “don’t doubt he tries heart out”

He's not as good as he thinks he is, clearly.

I guess he tries his best. Unfortunately his best isn't good enough.

When he gaffs it, he gives up too easily instead of trying to make up for his mistake.

And yet apparently we're paying him just south of 2 million a year for the next three years. This is why we'll be lucky to remain solidly in the Championship if recruitment carries on like this (and given the evidence of the past couple of years, there's no reason to think that it won't - it's developed into a damaging track record).

Obviously I know why he signed the new contract. Even if it was a wage reduction for longer term security as often the case with contracts, it is still money to set him for life.

For footballing reasons, why would he do it? He can’t be happy. He can’t enjoy life. He won’t succeed he now. I feel for him as I think he was set up to fail with the timing he broke through and his development was handled horribly. Yes he could have done more to self improve but ultimately, we are now at a point where he is hated.

It’d have been less money but he could have left and rebuilt himself somewhere new.

I'm struggling to come up with a worse LB I've seen since the mid 90s.  Can anyone suggest someone?

Jamie Clapham or Ryan McGivern?

Was Jacob Laursen a left back?

Well yes, as I said, financial he is just fine.

But he seems a guy who struggles with the mental side and confidence so is money everything? I am just saying from a footballing point of view, he needed a fresh start.

Has lived off his cup final performance and one night where he put Salah in his back pocket for 90 mins for 4 years now. Since then he's had two unsuccessful loan spells at mid clubs, been kept out the side by VK (two cheeks of the same arse frankly) and developed a "long" throw. It's clear the only reason he got a new deal was because he's home grown with little or no value and 5/10 LB already here is cheaper than recruiting another replacement who ends up flopping like Kristiansen.

The fact we haven't scouted/bought anyone better than this kid in the last 5 years is another black mark for Glover & Co.

Especially as the simple pass to the winger was on and he was under little pressure. He created it by stopping and looking to play backwards.

Thick and useless, not a great combination.

McGivern. Jesus, still difficult to believe he was in Walsh's portfolio.

Spearing and Platnauer were equally terrible late 80/early 90s.

Oh for a Mike Whitlow now. Solid.

His wage doubled - there was no reduction !

Do you think he's lazy?

I'm not sure that's his problem. Arguably, it's worse than that.

The last part of your opinion I completely agree with. He’s a friend of a friend and I know for a fact he’s a lazy person. I honestly don’t know how anyone can make a case for him not being lazy, but if that’s your belief though, I have to respect that.

One of those players who you wonder if he'd stand out playing for Oadby Town*. Same with Daka. Just no quality at all.

*no offence to Oadby Town

Hyperbole- yes he’s poor this season but you would see his touch, passing and ability to read the game would stand out. Nonetheless he needs dropping.
