McGivern. Jesus, still difficult to believe he was in Walsh's portfolio.

Spearing and Platnauer were equally terrible late 80/early 90s.

Oh for a Mike Whitlow now. Solid.

Indeed.

There's not many names out there.

Not sure we can count McGivern as he was on loan?

I'd have a Whitlow right now tbf.  Or a Berner.  Even Callum Davidson.  We're a total mess at LB right now.  I wouldn't play anyone there since we have noone capable in the position.

The fact that Middlesbrough didn't follow up on Thomas after that loan spell should have been enough to know that he isn't capable at this level either.  Then he gets 4 years.  lol

Cooked eh?

Heated to the correct temperature and nice to eat as a result?

Opposed to 'cold' which would mean good?

Can't wait for the draft and the tailgating that ensues.

Least winningest left back. Deeefense.

He's so cooked that we're not the winningest. Needs to be more cold on the offense, shun.

Maybe try to be the most offensive member of the pack. Maybe next time he'll hit the home run.

I just thought. Maybe a quarter back and receiver in the offensive would be good.

So cooked. Like an omelette. Cooked.

I think he's quite possibly the worst starting full back in the division.

Was watching Wimbledon v Burton earlier - real low quality, while news filtered through of Thomas' shitshow it dawned on me that he wouldn't even stand out at that level.

Four ****ing years. It's absolutely scandalous.

Have people decided if it was a 3 year or 4 year extension.

Can distinctly remember some smart arse on here being absolutely fine with it as it was only 3 years and not 4 years as reported.

No worries if it is, great decision by the club. But if it was that extra years. The bastards. Hope I’ve got that right.

All from Capology.com as good info as you can get. There’s absolutely no evidence anywhere that there’s been a wage cut. Quite the opposite.

Completely unforgivable then. I had convinced myself, probably in hope, that often a longer deal is given for security for lower wages. And that lower wages would make a sale possible. A small profit would be seen as good business over him walking for free.

But yeah, not going to happen. Sickening.

He's valued at around €6m now. Would have been better to have him leave on a free or on loan. But he's had two loan spells already. He's going to cost us just shy of £6m in wages p.a. (minimum, as that excludes bonuses). That's €6.8m. So another joins the list that other clubs might take on a free, or on loan or for around £5m at best, but they won't pay him those wages, so he'll hang around (and why wouldn't he - I would) on nearly £2m a year and we won't be able to shift him.

This is why I thought it made sense if wages were reduced as we don’t need a fee at all but if it was wages another club would take on, we could get a small fee that is still better than nothing.

But yeah, seems that is not the case so he will be stuck around for years to come.

Thomas was terrible yesterday but he was not helped at all with lack of tracking back by Monga who looked very disinterested.

Monga may not track back at 16, but he had nothing to do with Thomas not getting goal side for a simple long ball, or Thomas unable to control the ball that lead to Winks giving away a penalty.

Thomas has been at fault for the first goal concede in all our losses this season and has to be dropped.

No but there are so many smaller problems, it all merges. TBH "Ok in the championship" should mean a solid, 7/10 defender with occasional assists who occasionally gets scouted by Burnley or Fulham. He's not even close to that level.

It's clear to me that teams are targeting our left side. Thomas and Monga too light weight and Monga not the best at defending and tracking back. Mavididi may be hot and cold but he puts a shift in and gets back. Kristiansen and Mavididi have to come back to starting 11.

Goodness gracious

There's some merit in the first part of that statement to be fair. Unfortunately, after looking somewhat competent at the back end of last season, he's completely fallen off a cliff and looks honking now.

really wanted luke to do well as a local lad.

all this 'he isnt our biggest problem' is a load of tosh. left back is as a big a problem as our striker issues imo. a non functioning, below par left back gives us a non-functioning left side defensively and dwindles our attack on that side.

yes strikers generally score the goals but they need every team member to play their part.

big big problems at the club BUT we need to find our inner fight and doggidness firstly and then hopefully our star players (abdul, ramsey, james) quality can shine through

up the ctiy

Taking away his physicality and lack of athleticism. He doesn't play like a bloke who has ~150 career appearances at a high level. He looks scared of the sport

Yup. Some fans bang on about him like he’s some naive 18 year old academy product.

Couldn’t agree more with this. He should have been taken out of the side a few games ago, before one of the worst individual defensive performances I’ve seen in years.
He simply cannot start the next game.
I don’t care if we don’t have a decent natural left back replacement. If it’s not Kristiansen then Marti needs to use someone else out of position like he did at Millwall.

As bad as we were after the first 20 minutes, if Thomas could defend I don't think we'd have lost. He was beyond bad and he's had a few games like that now.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the extra contract. It's been done to avoid losing him on a free. Although I can't really work out why they turned down the bid from abroad.
