I've done the double in 2020: no birthday cards and no Christmas presents! lol

Daughter says a present is on its way, ordered a couple of days ago - biography of Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners.

Didn't even get a card from my brother, but that's par for the course with his disorganisation. He remembers my birthday 1 year in 4, but sent the card a month early a couple of years ago - got the month wrong.

Had a lovely day relaxing and chatting with daughter, though. She seemed pleased with her presents (games gadget, scooter, couple of books, novelty socks, various ornaments, the traditional chocolate coins/Santa).

Chicken roast dinner all went well, wasn't raw or burned and was appreciated. Daughter has gone to her Mum's now so not sure what to do with myself now.......

Another small tick that runs parallel in our lives The original & old Dubliners..

I Introduced them to my girlfriend, now wife many a year gone now, went to quite a few concerts..also had the good fortune to see them down at my old local in Berlin, doing a promptu sing along in the Irish Harp.Got all their songs/reels & jigs..what a story teller Mr Ronnie Drew was. !! & what a singer of a  life gone by Luke Kelly was..

I only ever saw them live twice:

- 1969-70, Folkestone Leas Cliff Hall: My first ever "gig" (with my parents), aged 7-8

- 1987-88: Catford Town Hall: post-Luke era

Being a drunken idiot, I also missed Ronnie Drew solo at The Musician (Leicester) c. 2004 due to a massive hangover - I suspect Ronnie would've understood

My parents had 3 Dubliners LPS that I used to play to death as a small boy. So they were my very first love in music and I still rate them highly on every level.

What a range between them: from barnstorming passion and rabble-rousing via poignant sensitivity and skilled musicianship to sing-a-longs, good fun and humorous numbers (Ronnie's specialism).

Only John Sheahan (fiddle) of the classic line-up left now - also Sean Cannon, the vocalist with the thankless task of replacing the much-lamented Mr. Kelly.

Should be a good book as Drew is a very funny man (though the book started as an autobiography but was mostly completed by his son and daughter, based on his tales, as I understand it).

Before he even formed The Dubliners, back in the late 50s, he spent a good while in Spain busking and teaching/learning guitar, I think - should be interesting.

Is "cruising into your port" a euphemism for the sexual activity that Edwina Currie was encouraging the other day?

I imagine that you are only asking in case it ever pops up in one of those lockdown friends and family quizzes ?

Yes, I'm in a Facebook group for The Dubliners, from which I gather that they had quite a following on the continent, especially Germany and Scandinavia.

Nice. You're going to have to do a bit of melting to get them to take the knee, though.
