I’ll wait until we’ve batted until judging this deck.

What is impressive however is we’re already 10 overs down in terms of over rate and that’s with spin doing a lot of work.

Strong start from Pakistan. Ball isn't doing much for any bowlers.

If it stays like this for when England bat, could be some big scores from the likes of Root, Brook and Smith.

Odds on the draw anyone?

Maybe there is still hope of a win ..

From the BBC ..

“We have already mentioned Pakistan first innings of the first Test against England two years ago when the hosts scored 500 and still lost”

The problem is that our players will get out playing silly shots. If we bat with discipline we can still go at 5+ an over without risking too much.

Agreed. Can still be attacking but sensible. They aren't mutually exclusive from one another!

They did that well enough over in Pakistan the last time.

Pretty old school days cricket it seems. The way England play a result is still likely, either they'll score quickly and get parity and pitches can some times deteriorate pretty fast. Or we play stupid shots and get out cheaply.

England only really draw games if bad weather is about.

Seems to be a different approach from Pakistan today so  far .

England have controlled the flow of runs .

They’ve got a handy score now though, if we can skittle them asap we’re still in it, if they get to 600 it’ll start to look ropey and the win is probably gone.

Well done Root, England's highest ever test run scorer :appl:

I wonder how many years he's got left at the top - 3 or 4 more years?

Can see him overtaking Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting but not sure he'll catch Tendulkar.

Agree, the next 3 aren’t all that far away and bunched close together.

Tendulkar still miles away though ain’t he lol

Phenomenal player. Longevity is underrated!

Should get to 600-700 from here by this time tomorrow. If we can put pressure on them with that score then it is Pakistan, so we still have a great chance of winning.

Love the optimism, but two scores of 500+ with what would likely be only be a day to play on an absolute road, a win for any team is highly unlikely.

Was watching earlier and during commentary it was mentioned that Root had been off the field for all of 8 balls.

Really hope Root performs in Australia. Only thing missing from a brilliant player. Hard to see anything other than a draw unless the pitch suddenly deteriorates but at at least England's style gives them a chance. Nearly at 500 in a day and a bit.

Must be annoying looking at the scorecard if you're Pope.

Might not be something he holds for long with Kamindu Mendis about lol

Ha, yes.

But then if you look at the top tier on that record, that will probably only ever be held by one man.

Edit: and the same for the fastest to 3/4/5/6000 runs too.
