Who’s ever had Gray or Joachim as a first name? Or have I misunderstood, again?

Joachim Low

Gray is less common, but there are some, especially in the states. No less odd than Ferdinand

Joachim is definitely a Germanic first name-there’s quite a few around.

I don’t believe Gray is an actual first name-maybe he’d have had a bit more end product if he’d been Demarai Gary...

Now there’s a first name as surname XI that could challenge any other first name as a surname XI on earth.

Just about every Welsh surname is, in fact, a first name (Williams, Owens, Richards, Griffiths, Davies, Jones [Johns] etc).

Strange really.

Even the Welsh surnames you don't think come from other names do so.

Ap / ab means "son of"

Powell = Son  of Hywel

Pritchard = Son of Richard

Price = Son of Rhys

Bowen = Son of Owen

Bored, yet?  :)

And Evans/Bevan of course.

As someone with Welsh connections it's often puzzled me.

Plus the fact that so relatively few different surnames are used in Wales.

(Leading to the Jones the post, Jones the milk usages).

The Welsh, just like Icelanders and Russians used a largely patronymic system.

Maybe they, more than some other Nations, thought it important to identify who their Dad was :ph34r:
