Use this, oil and bees wax and will last for years because it penetrates the wood.  A stain and varnish product is prone to water getting under it after a few years

It is good stuff but really expensive.

Anyone know if I can use this, or similar, on decking that i have already given 3 coats of green ducks back ?

There will be people on here that know more, but I think Ducksback is a waxy formula that is meant to repel liquid that would stop the other stuff soaking in

DeckingTalk.

There are so many problems in the world, but this is one we can nearly all relate to.

Remember the great Ducksback shortage during the first lockdown? That's when I knew shit was getting real

Ducksback is the boy on fences. Not sure on decking; but if you've ducksback'd it; then its done.

I wouldn't use any fence product on decking, it's not made to stand foot traffic.

Correct; maybe on the surrounding uprights etc if desired.

Osmo is the answer. Its expensive; but think of it in terms of your time.

Spend £70 once (or whatever) and a few hours

Or spend £25 quid every year and a loads of hours and weeks of the wife whinging

So, just to be clear.

Paint your fences with ducksback.

Don't get a wooden deck; get a composite one. Or a patio.

If you do have a wooden deck; or benches.. or whatever... just use Osmo.

Don't ever ever go cheapest with these things. You'll spend hundreds of hours of your time applying it, so why go so cheap as to have to do it more regularly.

I think that's us about done here?

Osmo is the name of the company btw, they make different oils, as do other firms. For outside the UV protection is best, the finish if you do it right is like a satin varnish. Make sure the surface is clean and dry first. If it's bare wood you'll probably want 3 coats, thin the first coat down , around 40% white spirit and then 2 coats of neat or nearly neat. After that they recommend 1 coat a year.

Painting decking's not hard, you can't get runs on a flat surface, it's virtually impossible to do it wrong.

It was at least 60 quid a tin on ebay.  I couldn't get the colour I wanted either.  B and Q only do the cheap garbage too.  Got it from Homebase in the end I believe.

Quality stuff though but like with all paints coverage is literally half what it says it will do if you want a decent finish.

I wouldn't use it on decking though lol

Off topic but found some fantastic patio stone restoring stuff on ebay last year.  Really brings it back to true colour.  Basically it's extremely highly concentrated bleach.  Does the job!

It needs to be factored in to future pandemic planning that in the event of a lockdown, literally everybody with a fence will immediately paint it. You seemed to be able to buy other DIY stuff, just nothing you could paint a fence with.

Ducksback is good on rough finished wood, yeah. I'm not convinced that it will definitely last five years as claimed but on my bits of fence that have got at least 2 coats it looks like new after 3 years

My decking is about 7 years old. Rock solid, but looks shit after using a Ronseal paint.

Considering replacing with composite.
Do you think I would be ok with just screwing new composite deck boards on top, or do you think I would need to remove existing decking first and screw directly I so the existing structure. There are around 400 existing screws I would have to remove if I did this.

what about if my builders have used decking planks as a retaining wall............. Can I use ducks back then?? (i'm planning too!!) i'm hoping it will all be ok.....  I'm dreading the job.... the garden is MASSIVE (roughly 40m x 15m) and it has fence around all sides.....  I may JUST be finished painting by next summer....

Woodwork is not my trade but I've done a few decks and I know a few carpenters.  I'm pretty sure its always advisable to remove old timber and never clad over existing stuff, for decking or anything. If your base is solid then the new composite will be fine.

If you're not going to walk on it, it should be fine.

Yeah - just looking for someone to give me justification for not having to remove it to be honest! 🤣

I used a natural oil the first time on the recommendation of a former landscape gardener friend, and it looked great (I forgot the brand). Next time I did it 5 years later I just used a Ronseal one that looked ok on the tub. Properly washed and scrubbed it all first. It ended up looking bright red like some horrible tacky Chinatown decoration. Will never touch any of their products again
