Looking to stain my decking at home, does anyone have any tips or recommendations of what product to use please?

Would potentially be after something similar for the fence was well preferably the same colour or a 'wet look' as such.

The water based ones are dogshit. Go for an oil based one all day long. The stuff at B&Q is poor quality as pretty much all the stuff in there is.

I used Ronseal Deck Rescue (slate grey) 2 summers ago on our deck that was about 5 years old, and looked tired.

I pressure washed it, cleaned it with a deck cleaner and pressure washed that off.  Applied 2 coats of the paint (£40 per tin). Looked great.

Next season (so only 1 year on), it had peeled off in loads of places, and now looks shit.  Will never use it again. If I had decking again, I think I would use a natural looking protection oil that will soak in well.

I bought a big container of Ronseal decking oil at great expense, and my carpenter told me it was shit, and do you know what, he was right.

I'm going to try Cromar wood preserver next time. It's not really intended for decking but I've used it on the exterior of my shed and garden office and it goes on easily and lasts. Properly soaks into the wood. You won't get it in B&Q but if you're Leicester based they do it at the timber merchants near the Honda garage

If you take only one thing from this thread, then this is it. Avoid like coronavirus. Also, know that Ronseal really doesn't do what it says on the tin.

Osmo oil.

If you're doing fences (and I've painted and re-painted a few in my time) then the best I've used; and the only one I will use now is 'duck's back'

Search it on amazon or google or your favourite site etc. It goes on nicely and it does repel water (and you won't end up doing it every year) (but don't believe the one coat nonsense - I always do 3 because I'm a masochist).

As for decks, I've never had decks but asked my mates recently as we're getting decking done and they all said 'get composite'. Nothing seems to last to keep the wooden ones both healthy and protected and looking good. They seem to be an absolute time-sink - a bit like wrought iron fencing, which I have a load of and is a massive pain in the arse. I appreciate this doesn't help you, but no one ever said I was here to help.

We used this and applied with a roller. Took no time at all and looking good one year later.

exactly…. Oil all the way

Thin coats though!!!  Paint it in evenly…. Resist going over it too much - a quickly applied even thin coat

2 or 3 even coats and let them properly dry or it will get sticky

Osmo oil is fantastic…. I’ve only used it on furniture restoration though as it’s very good but deadly expensive!

I put some shelves up today Tom, and I’m really not happy with them.

My missus insisted the position but I think they are too close together. It’s driving me insane.

You don't want the same for your fence as decking. Decking is worn by people walking over it, fences aren't. Oil is the best thing for your decking. Linseed oil with a glug of white spirit in it would do a job for you but some of the specialist oils are good as well.

For your fence, the water based fence paints are all much of a muchness, don't spend too much.

We used to get old engine oil from a garage that my dad used to know the owner or one of the workers and slap that all over the fences.

Looked awful but they never rotted.

Old engine oil mixed with creosote was the best thing for underneath your shed, it'll never rot.
