Out of interest what else could someone like Romano do? He's not an agent arranging deals and he's not a clairvoyant. He's just managed to build up a reputation and buzz around him that means he gets fed constant inside transfer stories, often before the media or other sources reveal it.

I'm sure he does/did something once upon a time - journalist, whetever? But, as I said,  maybe "who you know" is a job these days.

Really? Given for years the football punditry was a job for the boys and most of them absolutely clueless I don't think the narrative that at least they played the game holds much weight. Plenty of ex footballers talk absolute bollocks just like plenty of educated journalists do. On the flip side there are a number of ex players that are great pundits and there are a number of sports journalists who write quality content.

Definitely. Football journalists are boring bastards who have failed at their profession. If they were any good at being journalists they would be writing and reporting about something important. I honestly respect yours and most other posters on here opinions about football as well as any pissed up punter in a pub.

...and yet so many young people on TV say they want to be a Sports Journalist and actually do a Sports Journalist type of degree.

Mate, you've been owned  - that man never has got anything wrong in his life. In fact, he's so sharp that I have him on ignore...

Thought you were a broadcaster though? That's takes ****ing skill man I couldn't do that. I could write generic cliches in the Observer though as could anyone on this website.

Some football journalists are really good- Henry Winter seems to have a real understanding and interest in the game as a whole- but many are big club obsessed, click bait bores full of their own self-importance. The smugness and self-satisfaction coming out of the Sunday Supplement studio each week should've come with a health warning for the nearby public.

Was thinking that myself. Can't remember ever having a run in with this guy so I'm struggling. His loss though, bloke is missing out on some of the best content on this website.

Mate, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. We had no run in - I guess something must have been said a long time ago that I didn't like.

Sounds like these guys might be in a bit of financial trouble. Which is not surprising when they started out as a £60 a year subscription and are now throwing out £1 a month offers left, right and center.

Also seen a couple of their writers stating to move on. It’s felt a bit like a sinking ship for a couple of months now.

It appears Mark Carey has replaced Tanner as the Athletic’s Leicester City reporter.

Not sure what his background is, except he's been a general PL writer there.

Maybe the beat wasn't generating enough interest / ₤ ₤ ₤ to maintain a full-timer?  Or maybe Tanner just wasn't generating much engagement?

He’s on holiday apparently…

The Athletic is being bought out by the New York Times.  $550m. Expect subscription fees to go up to pay for the acquisition fee.

Doubt it. They'd lose subscriber's. NY Times wants to expand its reach and will make plenty from the data it's getting.

Hope they get someone better than Tanner in who’s more than just a mouthpiece for the club.

The football policing article was embarrassing
