This would be a classic case of a pointless signing. The financial outlay would be nowhere near worth what we'd get back.

There must be on old LB out there that we can sign as back up on a 1 year deal.

I hope it does, but if we get shafted by injuries to someone like Barnes again, we might prefer to go narrow again. Same if both Wilf and Soumare were to get injured - the only reason we started playing it was because we didn't have enough height with Mendy in a midfield 3 to defend set-pieces.

We certainly need to increase our left footed players, which should happen if we get in the RW and back up left back to add to KDH and Sowah's inclusion in the squad.

Bertrand on a free makes massive sense with Fuchs leaving. I'd loathe us to spend serious dough on a left back/wing back and another centre half and not leave ourselves enough to get 3 attack minded additions to the squad.

For me, LB is not a priority. Clearly further up the pitch is far more pressing

I think that's the thinking of the club, hence it's a free signing rather than spending 25-35m on a LB, we'll probably do that in a year or two if Thomas isn't progressing as much as we'd like or we decide a player becomes available that's hugely better than Thomas.

I think he adds valuable experience, much needed with Morgan and Fuchs leaving the club. Plus, with JJ injured, we'll only have 3 full backs (one being Ricardo who is probably stilll months away from being back to his best) for the first half of next season, where we'll be competing in four competitions (five if you include the one off Community Shield), we'll definitely need another option. He'll surely be more than good enough for the early cup games, EL games against lower opposition and the occasional EPL appearance or sub appearance. Also fits into a back 4 or 5, so can play both our systems!

I believe signing him will mean that the money we'd spend on a LB will be invested into another position. Even if we don't sign him, we'll go for another LB that's cheap for a year or so, unless someone who we genuinely believe is class becomes available.

If we go into the new season where one injury forces a change of shape then the club and management have failed.

My god some of you lot are what we call in moroccan arabic zaama, meaning die hard, you'd think we were signing the devil in human form. He's a good backup!

If we sign Bertrand seems a big statement of intent to use Thomas regularly.

Not totally against that, thought he improved as the season went on and he looked really steady in the crucial games at the end of the season, even where others weren't playing so well. I'm not entirely convinced he's got the attributes to be a world class modern full-back but he's certainly coming along.

...if half our team had his composure and continued to do the right thing under pressure, we would not be so mentally weak!!!

We only have finite funds and squad places. We already have 3 players capable of playing left back. Do we need a 4th player who will probably command 40-50k a year and take up a squad place?

So we have this player for a minimum of 2 seasons taking up a good chunk of wages who ideally will barely play. Or we could spend that money on areas where we're genuinely struggling.

We have Thomas who is the only natural left back in the squad, Castagne looks pretty poor on the left and Justin we probably won't see play for us until 2021, we need someone else to come in.

We go into the season with Ricardo, Castagne and Thomas and we instantly lose any ability to rotate if 1 gets injured.

The club are looking to offer him a 1 year deal.

That is quite literally what the club are trying to do with Bertrand...

You think he'd take a 1 year deal on a reduced salary?

If Bertrand would agree to come and sit in as 3rd choice full back for 20-25k for one season then fair play. I can't imagine it myself.

I'd imagine he will be wanting at least 50k for 2 years with an option for a 3rd.

Fair play if it is one, I'd have jumped the gun a bit. At 31 I can't imagine him ever wanting to sign a 1 year deal.

I don't know whether he would or not, but it certainly seems like it is what the club are trying to do, so they must think there is a chance he would take it.

He would be 2nd choice until at least January.

We’re currently playing a barely championship quality player in Hamza 60k a week to be about 4th choice... it’s safe to say wages have gone fully nuts and none of us will have any idea what value is anymore to clubs

1 year at a max of 30k a week I won't mind :D

2 years I'd pass.

I don't buy that Hamza is on 60k. 90% of sources have him at £7.5k p/w and one has him at 60. I know we're bad with contracts, but we can't be THAT bad lol

Because Fuchs already said in his interview on the club site that he didn’t want to leave but it was finally time to go back home to his family.

Not sure why people are moaning about this he would be a great signing

In his prime still - great at full back or wingback - one of the best in his position in the prem and a good team man too !

we have only one left footed full back and he is still learning so this is a no brainer on a free - give him a 2 year deal and we have solved a squad issue!

Castagne and Ricardo prefer the right and Justin won’t be back properly until season after next - ACL’s take a full preseason to recover from and he will not be back until later this year and unlikely to be back to best until 22/23 imo!

He's not in his prime is he, come on. But as a solid squad player he's useful.
