Leicester City linked with in-demand Premier League free agent

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers worked with the left-back during his time at Chelsea

Leicester City are believed to be in the frame to sign soon-to-be free agent Ryan Bertrand.

It has been confirmed the left-back will leave Southampton when his contract expires at the end of the season after seven years with the Saints.

“Whilst that time will always be fondly remembered, the club and Ryan have agreed that now is the time to respectfully part ways and move forward on different paths,” said a Southampton statement.

The availability of the experienced full-back will alert a number of Premier League clubs and, according to the Evening Standard, the Foxes have a “long held interest” in the former Chelsea defender.

Leicester were linked Bertrand back in January 2020.

At the time, Brendan Rodgers, who worked with the player during his time on the coaching staff at Chelsea, said: “Ryan’s a player I know very well. We took him into Chelsea at 16 and he’s had a brilliant career.

But we’ve got England’s number one left-back [Ben Chilwell], we’ve got a fantastic senior professional here in Christian Fuchs, and we have James Justin who can play left-back as well.

“At this moment in time, it’s not a position we would be looking at.”

Arsenal, West Ham United and Crystal Palace are also reportedly interested in Bertrand.

The Gunners were linked with the 31-year-old and while a move to north London did not materialise, manager Mikel Arteta is still believed to be keen on the player.

I think this depends on how confident Rogers is on starting Thomas, Ricky getting back to full fitness and letting Castagne play on the left and Justin making improvements.  If any of the above aren’t looking likely then we’ll probably go for Gossens or another big money left back but if any of those options are to Rogers liking then o think Bertrand would be a decent Fuchs replacement who may get a few minutes in cups and be decent cover.

Useful squad player, experienced, but expect his wage demands will be too high for him to play that role for us, given he is a free agent

Hopefully Pension Top-up contracts are no longer on our Agenda.  Wages and signing on fee could be better used elsewhere.

Think this one could depend on other signing.

For example, if we got Trincao on loan, we could spend money on getting Gosens in but if Trincao wasn't available and we had to splash some cash on someone like Periera, we may well take the cheaper option of Bertrand.

cant see anything wrong with this.  We need a bigger more experienced squad if we genuinely want to compete at the top end of the table each season.  Very useful squad player bring him in.

Reality of not finishing in the top 4 unfortunately. For a free I can see us signing him and him being our starting LB next season with Thomas as back up - It’s clear both Castagne and Ricardo can’t play on the left very well.

How on earth do you come to this conclusion?

It’s not difficult is it? Currently we have one fit LB, a 19 year old... & it wasn’t even meant as a negative, I’m sure he’ll had experience.

From what Southampton fans have been saying about Bertrand, Thomas would be the better option as first choice!

Give you head a wobble if you really think we're gonna sign a player like Betrand to be 1st choice. Have you not been paying attention to how the club has operated over the past few years?

Signing a veteran fullback that Southampton no longer require defies logic.

He's leaving Southampton because he wants a 3 year deal and they are only willing to offer 2.

I'd take it if I were him ,better the devil you know. Two years is a long time in football.

Well if we need a RW/ST/CM then where is this money coming from to sign a £20m LB?
