A bit like Belgium under Martinez, if England ever win a trophy it will be in spite of Southgate, not because of him.

Some incredible tools at the disposal of both of those managers and neither of them have the ability to utilise them.

Southgate comes under well too much criticism for me. The reality is, a lot of managers don't view the England job that highly. In 2016 the FA literally interviewed Steve Bruce and gave the job to Sam Allardyce. People mention that he wouldn't get a premier league manager's job and whilst that is probably true, international football is almost a different sport to club football. Fair enough if you think there are managers out there that could get this team over the line, that's your opinion. However, people still treat him as though he's some sort of joke and he absolutely doesn't deserve to be spoken of in those terms. He is the only manager that England have had in the past 25 years that has managed to build some sort of team spirit and he manages the players and the media very well, which is very important when you have the most heavily scrutinised job in the country (yes, more so than the prime minister).

I know that we were at home but we literally lost on penalties in the final of the euros. The margins don't get any finer than that.

His tenure has to be considered a reasonable success on paper. In reality though we've bottled the lead in our two biggest games in 20+ years. Taken us as far as he can and now we have a squad that can actually win tournaments if we had a better manager in charge. The difference between Mancini and Southgate is like Tielemans to Gareth Williams .

I think another stick that people beat Southgate with which is unfair is the old "he beats teams that we should be beating". The last England manager that managed more than one game failed to beat Costa Rica, Uruguay (ok they have two top class players in their side at the time), Russia, Slovakia and Iceland in major tournaments. Whereas the one before him failed to beat USA and Algeria in the group stages of the world cup and the man before failed to qualify for the euros. Ok, it's a low bar but those ***** were very successful in lowering my expectations of the national team.

Southgate has done his job (and continues to do so) as England manager. I get frustrated with him (as I think I would with any international/club manager) when it comes to tactics, choice of player etc. However, two tournaments in which he has really competed and done a lot better than most of his predecessors. He may not be an innovator like Pep but he makes up for it via his man management. The players play for him and gets results. He is doing a good job.

The FA will particularly like the fact he seems to be very happy to give young players a go and the squad seems to be together and always progressing .

The style of football might not to everyone liking and tactics sometimes a bit negative but they will view Southgate as building and developing a squad for years to come .

I don't understand why long contracts are given out before tournaments, especially to a manger who won't be in demand or having his head turned.

Judge it on a finals-by-finals basis.

Seems like a decent man manager which is important. It just feels like a really talented generation of players is going to be wasted when all he wanted is an organised defensive unit of 7 and then a few pacey lads to kick it to on the break.

We haven got near winning a Trophy in 60 years...Robson, then Venables, Now Southgate have been near...So You Dont like anybody who walks into your pub..

Bit Southgate IMO has Grew into the job & is Handling it well...He s still young , has a Good learn curve .

Deserves this Next Phase of developement....He aint failing yet, we were Not Good enough against Italy...

Then again some People are born to moan...

Let's be honest, there's no way that Guardiola would want to be in a position where he can't go out and sign better players if the ones he has aren't to his liking. As you are alluding to, international management is completely different to club management. The challenges are very different. You can't go and sign players, what you have is essentially what you have, and you don't get much time on the training ground either.
