It's Always Sunny in Wrexham

One thing I would credit them about is they have chosen a club not in the south and a club already with a bit of history and fan base of it's own. Would have been annoying if they bought a southern club like maidstone and pumping more money and interest into London. Hopefully this project is something serious and will bring success in the coming years... can imagine fans of Chester must be looking over in dread.

I’ve more admiration for Mansfield and the job Clough has done there over time. Just wished they’d had won the league.

Clough should of had them up sooner, the squad they've had at that level has under performed.

Unlucky last season to finish just outside top 7 but I think they’d finished about 17th the season prior to Clough taking over. Hopefully see it though this season.

Perhaps theyll buy there way out of league one next season. Wish we signed Mullins.

Didn't spent much this season in terms of fees.

Don't think there's much room to buy themselves out of League One given they are holding a debt of £8m to the owners.

They've completed bottled it again.

Stockport's rise back up through the divisions deserves praise but I'd bet their budget is equal to Wrexham. Louie Barry for a year wouldn't be cheap

They can inject as much cash as they want. Wouldn't be surprised if at some point they turned that debt into equity.

Clubs in the League 1 and League 2 operate within a Spending Constraint framework termed Salary Cost Management Protocol (SMCP). SCMP limits spending on player wages to a percentage of club Turnover. In League 1 clubs can spend a maximum of 60% of their turnover on wages - in League 2, the limit is 55%. There are no restrictions (in themselves) on the amount a club can lose or spend on transfer fees.

Under the SCMP rules, the definition of 'Turnover' is particularly important as Turnover is used to determine the maximum wage-spend. Within a traditional accounting perspective, there are usually only three elements of turnover:

  • Match-day Income
  • Commercial Income (such as sponsorship)
  • TV revenue (and any 'merit payments' based on league position)

However the Football League use a is broader definition of Turnover. Crucially, the FL Turnover figure includes donations from the owners to the club and injections of equity. Loans from club owners are understandably not included in the Turnover figure as these would result in growing club debts. up club debts.  In League 1 and League 2, a wealthy owner can therefore fund the club spending in a way that is not permitted in other divisions. Manchester City and Leicester for example seem set for punishment for their excessive losses (from UEFA and the Championship respectively) despite the fact that the owners have injected hard cash into the club to finance the spending.

Yeah it’s just that it would hold them back then getting promoted to the championship.

Particularly if the EFL follows the PL and UEFA wages to turnover percentage FFP calculation. They simply don’t have the revenue as it stands on that

The Championship is where it will get difficult for them, but League One should be fairly plain sailing for them if they want to spend the cash.

Agreed but the implications of FFP mean it’s your last three years under the microscope rather than that single year.
