We do zonal marking so badly. Teams that do zonal well still have the players deviate from their spot. Our players are absolutely rooted to the floor whilst attackers get a run on them.

The idea of not having players on the posts is so you have more 'active' players to prevent a shot in the first instance. Given our inability to do that, we might as well have one player on the post.

It's another huge issue we basically haven't bothered to address. They're starting to tot up now.

....conversely, why are we not being pro-active in getting our players to be as proficient in this area!!!

He did it once.

If it was that innovative why aren’t every team in the country doing it?

One game ? I'm pretty sure it was more than that. It was innovative at the time, it was mentioned in the media as such.

I'm not a coach, have no idea why 'every team in the country' didn't do it (although maybe most teams didn't have a Vardy with his blistering pace, or the nous of a Mahrez).

It was against Stoke. Didn’t use any other time. If it was a successful ploy, every team in the country would be using it. Instead every team pretty much in Europe uses a variation of what we use now. The difference is we do terribly.

Why does Brendan always bring Vardy back? Why not leave him on the half way line

He's a menace as well and not in a good way, surprised there's not been more OG's

Zonal marking done well is just about ok. Works the percentages but that’s all.

Proper marking, knowing your man and sticking to him along with men on the posts AND leaving some pace up front is, and always has been, the better way.  You do your work with the team. Everyone knows who they are marking and what runs those players usually make. You don’t switch off, you don’t leave it to someone else. It’s YOUR man and you dominate the fucher.

Well well well...Castagne on the back post... and finally we get a clearance off the line. Is someone listening?

Was watching with my brother in law and told him what Legia would do at this corner… as it started looping over Kasper I was smug as anyone and then Castagne smashed it out of the box.

How fvcking glad I was to be wrong. I hope its the start of us sorting this out.

A lot must have gone into defending last week because you could see at every set piece into our box Kasper was barking out the orders and you could see the players all pumped up and a little more switched on, at 1 point Kasper manhandles Thomas to get him in to the position he wanted him in.

Long may it continue, hopefully another couple of games were we smash it out and the confidence will come back into defending.

The obvious temporary fix is to just go and put a few of our players on the half way line. That way some of the opposition's defenders, who generally are the better players aerially, would need to stay back or risk being countered on. We did this well under Ranieri and barely conceded from corners from memory. Having everyone in the box, invites more trouble.

It would certainly help with Vardy being the obvious 1 as his reputation will keep at least 2 maybe 3 players back but Barnes would be a very good choice also as not only has he the pace but strength to hold it up to allow Vardy, Lookman or Ricardo to get up with him

Watched Gillette soccer yesterday and Micheal Dawson and Darren Bent both said zonal marking is a load of shit.

It works ok for Liverpool and to a degree Chelsea, although Chelsea do a mix of zonal with the biggest players whilst the smaller players man mark.

It don’t help that Kasper isn’t the biggest of goalkeepers so not 1 for coming out and plucking the ball out the air.
