I had the pleasure of interviewing Steve last night for the podcast "It's eleven, it's heaven for Jamie Vardy.

 

What a great guy, we spoke La Manga, Coaching, Nashville SC (where he is currently Assistant Coach), signing for the foxes, playing for England and much more.

 

What totally got me, was how he tried to get himself back in the team when Peter Taylor dropped him! Watch the vid to find out!

Legend. Grew up round the corner from me in Hampshire and I played for the same youth team as he did albeit a good few years after. Wrote to him as a nipper and he actually came back to me.

Best crosser from open play I ever saw at Leicester. Didn't need any space to whip a ball in.

I can confirm Sol is NOT Steve Guppy, Sol can actually head a ball, but cannot use his left foot at all!

Remember walking around the King Power in a daze the morning after we won the league and he was also there (presume for some tv interviews later on) but at that point he was also just walking around the stadium looking in a daze and emotional.

 

Both just nodded at each other and laughed.

Mates of mine who support the ‘big clubs’ laugh when I still to this day talk about how good his crossing and left foot in general was. You watch videos now - like Derby away when we scored 3 inside 15 mins or whatever it was - and the speed, flight and accuracy is phenomenal. Such a great weapon.

I spoke to him about Derby away, goals at Chelsea and Wimbledon. As you can guess he was amazingly humble about it!

I remember his England game...Shearer and Guppy linked up well that day

The term "whipping the ball in" was made for him.

It's still a disgrace he only got the one cap at a time when he was the best left-footed player in England by a country mile. People moan about big club bias nowadays but it feels like it was miles worse back then.

You might be right to be honest. I can't recall anybody better.

 

We had Parker at the same time and he's still one of the best strikers of a dead ball I've ever seen. No wonder we scored so many from set pieces.

That was one of the worst pieces of lip-service ever served up - Keegan picked him against Belgium, and it was so obvious that he'd never play again after that that even I spotted it. It was like the kid at school who gets picked once for the team as a token gesture, and nothing he can do will alter either perceptions or the fact he'll never get picked again.

Legend. Even after all we’ve achieved in the last few years that O’Neill team of the late 90s still holds a special place in my heart. Love every one of them.

Claridge had gone by that time, but pedantry aside it's the same for me. Still the quintessential Leicester team.

Yeah, muchbthe same, though I always consider Keller as our keeper of that era, even though Flowers probably was around for sightly longer. 

 

Guppy's whipped, flat, bending crosses were a thing of beauty. I dunno why or how so few have ever replicated it. I guess TAA is the nearest equivalent nowadays

We only really got 2 good seasons out of Flowers, Keller 3. Flowers was brilliant. Was superhuman in some of the backs to the wall cup wins we had in 99/00. 

 

I could talk for hours on mid to late 90s Leicester. We had a great team.

That game v Arsenal where we beat them on Penalties after Flowers was making save after save. He went off and Porno Pegguy came on and did exactly the same!

Even though the shin will never be forgotten I always think of cottee in the team out above simply because claridge is such a tool anytime I see him on TV its blemished the memories of him somewhat.
