I think a big factor in weather they make it is attitude and desire. There’s plenty of good players that don’t make it because of this. I remember one tournament my daughter was playing at and there was this lad on one of the teams who had been at academy’s all over the place but kept getting dropped.

When I watched him play I could see why, great player but his attitude stunk, he had no respect for the opposition, acting billy big bollocks over his team mates. His mum couldn’t understand why he kept getting released but for everyone else it was clear to see.

They need to keep their feet grounded, respect the teammates, coaches and opposition. Listen and be willing to work hard and show that they are taking on board what they’re being taught and improve.

Looking at the lads coming through and who have cemented themselves in the first team squad it seems they have the right attitude.

The difficulty is with the kids is stepping up, I don’t know if anyone can recall Brandon Barker? I think it was, who played for man city. I can remember watching him play out academy and he looked quality, and then as far as I’m aware he vanished into the obscurity of the football no mans land……

Making that step is key, and he’s got the confidence to do that, and clearly has the skill set to also.

I thought I was the only one who’d remember him - we played them in an FA Youth Cup Quarter/Semi Final and he was like a man amongst boys.

Good to see us Groby lot getting some positive vibes rather than being known as the place where there's a good car park for dogging!

Noted. Thanks for that

Was Dave Buchanan 16 when he made his debut on Weller In Tights Day against Norwich in the FA Cup Third round?

I think Dave Buchanan made his debut (and scored) on New Years Day v Oldham, the week before the FA cup game.

He was a great prospect.  It just shows you can't always tell who's going to make it long term, and who it just doesn't work out for.

Good memory. Was this Gary Lineker's debut as well?

You know that foxestalk meet up that’s been talked about in the past before…

I can see there being an accidental meeting of members at groby pool, er some car park somewhere in groby.

Yeah, I think Gary Lineker also made his debut that day (New Years Day).

He struggled a bit, and didn't get a regular run in the team that season ... although he did score a crucial goal in a 1-0 win at Notts County, towards the end of that season.

We were in danger of dropping into the 3rd Division, and that late goal up at Notts County - his first professional goal - just about saved us.   We had a really young team that season, and just did enough to stay up, but it was touch-and-go at one point.

As per original point, no matter what the early promise - you never quite know who's going to make it in the long run.

Cheers . I remember that Notts County game and that Lineker scored. Obviously no idea how his career would progress. Agree about players that might make it or not.

He regularly puts his highlights on his Instagram after games and training of him quite often taking the absolute piss out of his opponents, his skill on the ball and the technique is brilliant

I remember that very match, didn't they stuff us about 6-1 and Barker was an absolute machine. Think he ended up on loan in the SPL for a while, may even have been Rangers.

It was, Chilwell was our best player that evening, he was class!

Putting the full link here so more people see it!

There is something quite humbling about seeing a 16 year old who is better than you will ever be! His close control and dribbling is incredible, it's Mahrez level and honestly not that dissimilar to a certain Argentinian player that recently transferred to PSG. Decision making is always the thing that sets players like this apart, and he's rather greedy from that highlights reel, not a fan of passing it, which also reminds me of Mahrez! But that can be taught in time for sure.

He was actually using that dribbling skill in his camero appearance today, so it's clearly already bamboozling defenders from our first team.

He's just a kid at 16, but that is almost elite levels of natural talent. If he's coached correctly and has the right mental attitude this guy will go places. Ric Flair mentioned earlier that Rodgers probably gave him debut already because the academy value him so highly and I bet that is 100% the thinking. The club will want to prove to this boy that there is a clear route to the first team, he just needs to trust the process.

Will be interesting to see how his career pans out as he looks like a future men's England international in terms of talent.

Thanks strider, I'll learn how to embed a video soon. He's got a very bright future that's for sure. His dad is one of the most genuine people I know and I'm sure he'll keep him well grounded, not that he'll need to as by all accounts he's a good lad

We've had players with technical ability that has blown our coaches away, Ndukwu was one of them. Alves is another, with the right application and determination and we've a phenomenal talent on our hands.

Matt Piper has been going wild about him, says he's James Maddison but with more pace.

Thanks for bringing the video to my attention! More people need to see it!

I know very little about our academy but I've done plenty of coaching in my time, specifically at this age group actually. His close control and balance is phenomenal and those rainbow flicks are just *chef's kiss*!

Christ he would have been in year 6 when I was doing my final year of A levels at Groby. Same age as my eldest brother :nono:
