Ricey Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 It angers me that some people have this 'he deserves to die' attitude towards Best, if every person who was addicted to something deserved to die then there wouldn't be a lot of people left on this earth. George Best in some ways is a very weak person, I am totally the same in some areas. Best never killed anyone and was certainly not a bad person, don't get me wrong he made some silly choices in his life but I for one respect him and will be upset when he passes away.
adam Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 The doctor went into see George Best today and said: "George, I've got some good news and some bad news". "Give me the bad news", George replied. "I'm afraid you've only got an hour to live !" said the doctor. "****in' hell !!, so whats the good news ?" George replies. To which the doctor says: "It's happy hour !!"...... sorry!

Noone's saying he deserved to die, people are saying they have no sympathy for his condition. There is a difference.
Ricey Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 Noone's saying he deserved to die, people are saying they have no sympathy for his condition. There is a difference. I wasn't reffering to anyone in this thread, I've read a lot of peoples views in various other places that believe Best deserves to lose his fight. Also a number of people I've spoke to over the last few days have had the same 'serves him right, I hope he suffers' attitude.

Cobbo Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 Really? Even I'm not that callous! My brother is being just like that He doesn't understand that certain people have a weakness which allows them to become totally addicted to things they shouldn't. Dirty little t totaller.
Rincewind Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 I worked with somebody whose son was an alcoholic. He went to the doctor on many occasions, given tablets etc but he always relapsed. However it didn't help that his father was a heavy drinker and it was known for him to have a half bottle of whisker under his counter at work and would take a swig every now and again. His son was also a depressive and had no will to live. Drink was openly on show at his house and the father made no attempt to hide or not have the drink in the house. I believe his son died because of his addiction. Aged about 28. Iam not an expert so I cannot say why people are prone to alcoholism. Maybe it is in their genes, Just think of it in simple terms. If you walk past a shop/bakery and smell the bread and think that smells smashing, and go in and buy some. Or you could wait a while then remember about the smell and buy it later. An alcoholic in an environment where drink is available 24/7 will find it difficult to resist the temptation. George Best was in that situation. There was always someone to buy him a drink whether he wanted one or not and there were those who may have wanted him to relapse and spike his drinks. We don't know. We all have weaknesses. We also have strengths. The trick is balancing the two so your strengths can overcome your weaknesses. It is human to err.
Mark Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4380332.stm Football legend George Best has died in hospital at the age of 59.The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star had multiple organ failure after a lung infection he developed last week led to internal bleeding. Doctors on Friday had said Best was unlikely to survive the day and all they could do was make him comfortable. He had been in west London's Cromwell Hospital since being admitted with flu-like symptoms on 1 October, later suffering a kidney infection. Best, a recovering alcoholic, needed drugs after a 2002 liver transplant that made him susceptible to infection. The Belfast-born former footballer and television pundit had been prescribed medication to suppress the immune system and prevent his body rejecting the new liver. GEORGE BEST'S HEALTH March 2000: Severe liver damage diagnosed February 2001: Treated for pneumonia April 2001: Anti-alcohol pellets implanted into his stomach July 2002: Undergoes liver transplant November 2004: Routine operation to check on liver transplant October 2005: Treated for kidney infection in intensive care November 2005: Lung infection sees condition worsen Decline of the golden boy At the time of his hospital admission in October, Best's agent Phil Hughes said his client had been "off the drink" before being admitted to the hospital. Best is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the British and world game. His heyday occurred during the 1960s, and he brought a pop star image to the game for the first time. But the accompanying champagne and playboy lifestyle degenerated into alcoholism, bankruptcy, a prison sentence for drink-driving and, eventually, his controversial liver transplant. He helped Manchester United win the First Division title in 1965 and 1967 and the European Cup in 1968. His role in the team's success was recognised by his becoming the European Footballer of the Year in 1968. Best made 466 appearances for the Old Trafford club, scoring a total of 178 goals. He also won 37 caps - scoring nine goals - for Northern Ireland.
Ric Flair Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 George Best has just passed away, details to follow. R.I.P Legend
Ricey Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 Really? Even I'm not that callous! Sadly yes, it's very sad. Some people see addicts as scum, they can't comprehend why anyone would put themselves in that mess. My cousin is a heroin addict, a lot of people just see him as a low-life junkie when in fact he is a very kind and respectable person. He just got into the wrong crowd when he was younger and now it's too late, I'll be suprised if he lasts another year.
Katy Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 Sad Saw the breaking news on Sky News. He put up a heck of a fight but sometimes its not enough. Obviously never saw him play but if my dad said he was a legend then he is. Just watching some clips on sky now, I dont think there will ever be another player like him Rest in Peace George.
SystonFox Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 R.I.P George Best. only 18 so i cant comment on his footballing abilites but from clips/ things ive heard he sure was special. a legend im sure.
Ricey Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 RIP George, you brought smiles to many peoples faces and you were truely a blessed human being. For some reason I thought he would pull through no matter what and suprise everyone
Bert Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 R.I.P George Best, a true legend of football even though i never got to see him play. Tis sad
Milky Posted 25 November 2005 Author Posted 25 November 2005 They think it's all over...........it is now
Solihullfox Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 RIP Bestie. The man was a footballing genius who in todays world would be bigger than Ronaldinho et al.
Cobbo Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 One of the best footballers of all time - fact. He says remember him for his footy and I hope that's what everyone will do, because he was a genius. You'll always be remembered George, even by those who didn't see you play.
Ric Flair Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 My eyes have actually welled up, very sad day. I remember him commentating on a Leicester game for Gillette Soccer Saturday a few years back and it was nice to hear a football genius compliment Leicester. He'll never be forgotten and I hope he gets the respect he deserves as he's an absolute footballing legend, possibly the biggest ever. Gutted. Gone but never forgotten.

I think one of the reasons I'm so upset about this is because of Soccer Saturday, I used to watch him week in and week out. He had a great knowledge of football and said it how it was.
davieG Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 George in America - when he was passed his Best Hope it Works
Durnerz Posted 25 November 2005 Posted 25 November 2005 Its a strange feeling, before he died all I could really think was how he's abused his chance of life, however now he has died all the greatness of what he actually did has sunk in and the realisation that we have today lost a genius of the British game is really quite sad. RIP
