defo worth the risk to keep, if he is fit for 30 games we should be close to the top 6 as he is a class above anyone else we have

He's not really a class above anymore is he, even when fit over the past couple of years he's been as bad as the rest of them.

30 games. We could pay him 90k a week on a 3 year deal and you won’t see 30 games from him. 13 league appearances last year on a crazy salary, and we have people wanting him to stay. Don’t get it.

Releasing him, and using his wages elsewhere will be far more valuable.

His experience for a few games a season does not make up for money it ll take to keep him. Suggesting otherwise is brain dead, and will be the type of reasoning which keeps the squad bloated/over paid and therefore not competitive.

If people are dead set on keeping him, he needs a pay as you play contract, or offered a coaching role (I don’t know if he is even interested in this).

My other concern is he captained the side during its worst collapse for many years. It either suggests something about his leadership (remember he was captain and getting in to trouble with West Brom when they were relegated prior to us buying him), or that his input from the sidelines is not sufficient.

This means paying him the balance of his contract, give or take a little from negotiation, so no, it would be madness.

I dont see Vardy as a leader in the slightest

Depends how you view leadership.

What he did do was lead by example on the pitch, more of a talisman then a leader I suppose.

Unfortunately father time caught up with him and he was no longer able too.

Exactly. He could leave now with zero cost to the club. But the club wants him to stay - that’s the whole point.

Just seen your subsequent post.

Don’t know why the club are entertaining contract talks with him.

Get rid of this crock.

The captain that took us down.

Rid the club of the stench of relegation.

Well you'd have to question the logic of offering him a new contract if they didn't want him to stay.

Well it’s been widely reported that they’re trying to persuade him to sign a new contract, so if they don’t want him to stay that would be a weird move…

Stupid to offer him a new contract. He is too old and injury prone.

When fit, he’s be a class above the vast majority of centre halves in the Championship - maybe they’re confident they can get 25-30 games out of him?

Also, Soyuncu and Amartey have left, and Vestergaard is likely to follow. That’s three centre halves out of the squad. A fourth leaving would leave us down to Faes and Souttar. There are only so many new centre halves you can scout and recruit in one window..

Presumed this was largely agent talk. Will believe it when the club announce a pay by play contract firmly in our favour and not one that lines the pocket of a sick note.

Agree entirely so if he was to be given a contract then surely it would have to be tied to appearances? If he was young and likely to recover that's one thing but he isn't. Surely the money would be better spent on another younger up and coming replacement.

No, it was in the official statement when they announced the release of the other seven out-of-contract players:

“The Club remains in discussions with captain Jonny Evans with regard to his future beyond the expiration of his current deal this month.”
