If you were lucky you'd find a piece of dried chewing gum inside the lid. :twitch:

My first vehicle was an Austin A 35 Van and didn't even have winders just a small piece of glass stuck to the inside that you had to pull down with the ends of your fingers.

It didn't have wing mirrors either you had to buy them and fit them over the top edge of the side window

Old school indicator.

Does the driving exam still include you knowing the arm signals for indicating or slowing down?

I posted a similar thing some time back.

Hand signals are no longer part of the test and if you did use them, you'd get some strange looks from younger drivers

So indicators never break anymore?

Seems a bit dumb.

Of course indicators can fail but no one knows the alternative these days.

They just drive on regardless. So many people must NEVER check their lights, wipers, indicators, oil levels are functioning or at the correct level.

It's usually only when it comes to MOT time that faulty lights/indicators come.

I am still in the habit of checking regularly as I had to every time I started a shift.

We're supposed to check our vans every day. No one ever does

Fact is if you took five minutes longer on your job, management would want to know why.

Which gives me something you don't see anymore. People being left alone to get in with their job as they know how, without being constantly monitored, tracked and assessed.

So many drivers don't use them anyway

When I started work as an apprentice in manufacturing everyone assembling products had to record how long it took them to assemble even sub-assemblies. There was a dept. that had timed how long every task should take and people where paid a bonus if they performed better than the timed rate - they were constantly monitored. In fact the guy I was working with used to fiddle his times using my times by recording me taking longer adding some of his time to mine as apprentices couldn't earn bonuses.

Break lights certainly do.

As my wife drove to the end of our driveway the other day, I noticed one was dead. When she returned from her trip I set about replacing it.

Before going onto the next stage of my story, you need to know that my wife drives far more than I and for almost as many years.

To check all was well afterwards, I called her out to test it. You get in the car whilst I check the light comes on, I asked. She sat in the drivers seat and asked what she wanted me to do.

'Press the break pedal' I asked.

'Which ones that?' She replied.

If you know what this is… your shins probably still remember!
The classic school gym bench — part obstacle, part balance beam, part seating for a very awkward PE lesson. Whether you were doing forward rolls across it, balancing for dear life, or just trying not to fall off during circuit training, this old wooden beast holds memories for every school kid of a certain era.
