This lot and their supporters. Absolute lmao

I swear to god when parts of this country are experiencing their third flood in 12 months because of climate change, they'll still be on FB complaining that the council hasn't cleaned the drains, or that "it's always rained, we're in BRITUN man."

Still, I guess it's easy to cover your eyes and ears when you know the real disasters will hit other parts of the world, and they'll probably be dead before the catastrophic impacts in the UK hit.

That could be true (timeline is not exactly certain on such things, after all), but regardless they do seem remarkably unconcerned with their own legacies and the fate of their children and grandchildren, if they have any.

The populist right (for want of a better term) have created this catch 22 trap sadly. The trick on climate change is the same trick they pulled on Brexit and Covid. You can make all the economic or scientific arguments you like, Farage/Trump/Musk types will just tell them they’re lying and here’s some reasons why, the things can be completely made up and not in reality, it doesn’t matter.

The catch is that as soon as you go back and say “no you’re not believing the expert scientists or economists and evidence” the retort is something on the line of “you’re calling us stupid, how demeaning” to shut down the argument. The sad thing is many intelligent moderates side with them (even politicians like Macron) and say “you can’t talk down to them like that” not only legitimising their opinion but also essentially shutting down any response from the other side. It’s a catch 22 deliberately designed to get the other side in a position where their only rebuttal is one to data or evidence and therefore you can claim they’re demeaning you  by inferring you’re less intelligent than them.

I still hear many moderates arguing Brexit won because too many Remainers inferred Brexiteers were stupid when all they were doing is saying you need to look at expert economic opinion. Which to me shows this trap the populist right put out continued to work.

It’s the whole Metal Gear Solid 2 thing - there’s no such thing as truth anymore because people can’t invalidate each other anymore.

And what's the way that conclusion ends?

Making money is always more important.

As we’re seeing in LA currently, where there’s tragedy there’s trade.

So it would seem.

It's unfortunate that the majority only come to the conclusion that there are much more important things when it's much too late.

IMO you are overstating the impact of legacy, the world is in dire straits after the gifts of industrialisation were given to the boomers who totally cocked it all up. Rather than accept responsibility for their gross incompetence, they just tell us they had to go to the toilet outside and they had it really hard and their feelings have been hurt.

I am sure when our generation is easily held accountable for the burning down of the world, we'll come up with equally lame excuses like 'did you know we had to have a certain amount of PRIORITY POINTS to go to away games, not just 3d print ourselves onto the pitch to watch Rachid Ghezzal's grandson!! DID YOU KNOW!!!!!'

Bad trade then. Climate-related events are very costly. Investment in adaptation/mitigation is a great money maker

Corrupt exNTFC owning Tories finally going to court - shame their council chums who facilitated the theft of public money won’t be alongside them.

On a different topic, having a serious broken pedestal moment with the stuff that's been revealed about Neil Gaiman.

(Not an easy read, be warned.)

One of my favourite authors, and worked with Terry Pratchett too. I'm damn sure that Pterry knew nothing about this, because he wouldn't have let it lie if he had.

Absolutely depressing reading. Great writer and poet and I was a big fan of Amanda Palmer too, not seen anything from her but she will hopefully be vocal when the time is right.

Hope this ceasefire holds in Gaza.  One of the grimmest series of events this century.

I hope not, I would hope that our generation can place the accountability and so the penalty for it squarely where it belongs. And tbf, not all of those responsible are old now, either.

I think that will largely depend on whether or not the incoming administration will allow the Israelis to violate it pretty much at they please. I guess we'll find out.

Yes, very grim reading.

And, from what it looks like, Palmer is likewise herself culpable.

What I’m getting from this post is that you are still really really bitter about losing Brexit.

Honestly, it was years ago, get over it.

The problem with letting everyone vote is that loads of dumb dumbs vote and sometimes they have different opinions to the vastly more intelligent like yourself.

I don’t know what the answer to it all is???

History is going to look back on Biden and Blinken in a sickening way if all it took was a couple of threats and a click of the fingers from Trump to force Israel to a ceasefire.

It’s a complex agreement which basically kicks most of the difficult issues down the road for a few weeks.  They have to resume negotiations in 16 days ref phase 2 and we’ll see how the political situation in Israel has changed by then.

BN could be struggling to hang onto his coalition big time by then.

I am wondering what trump has potentially offered/promised to BN to get him to agree to things he previously refused to.

Tbh ser, the answer to it all is pretty simple and obvious, and it's beginning to make its presence felt already.

To be succinct: no one wins, "smart" or "dumb". What the individual thinks of that is, naturally, up to them.

Speculation is annexation of parts of the West Bank which is still terrible but if it gets the bombing to stop (and I’m assuming he made several threats to BN too) then it’s far better than the alternative and Biden’s disgusting inaction.

As per above, we'll see if the threats apply equally to both sides. If so, then fair enough, but I'm not exactly holding my breath here.

I think it’s possibly that but more likely that he’s assured BN that Iran won’t be allowed to develop a nuclear bomb that can be launched at Israel. (Either by allowing Israel to do as they need there or via USA becoming directly involved in effective sanctions).
that also works for Saudi btw

US President-elect Donald Trump will be consulted on the UK's deal to hand over the Chagos Islands, where there is a joint US-UK military base, to Mauritius.

The UK announced in October it would cede sovereignty of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean, but maintain control of the base on the largest island Diego Garcia under a 99-year lease.

Efforts to get the treaty signed before Trump's inauguration on Monday had been made, the BBC understands, and it had been expected the Mauritian cabinet would approve the deal on Wednesday.

The deal had already been greenlit by the Biden administration but the UK prime minister's office on Wednesday said the incoming Trump government would now "consider" the deal.

I would have thought that keeping hold of the CIA tortu-, sorry, "black site" would be enough for the US and their Conservative/Reform sycophants. Evidently the idea of empire dies hard.
