I remember Ben Thatcher being close but then choosing Wimbledon over us (O’Neil first season back in the PL). He did sign for us many years later though. Worked out pretty well, we signed Guppy instead who was a few levels above Thatcher.

Aaron Cresswell I remember being close until West Ham came in.

Wilf Zaha this summer.

Dean Windass was linked with us every season under O’Neil. He ended up at Bradford but probably would’ve suited that O’Neil side better than anyone.

There were a number the summer we sold Fofana, we pulled the plug because our DoF didn't think we'd sell Fofana, then he sold him.

Was there? We weren't able to spend any money, though.

I thought Rodgers had spoke to players who were keen on joining then the club broke the news to him that we couldn't due to FFP.

It was never nearly a done deal but the protracted 2015 pursuit of Charles Aranguiz always makes me smile.  He couldn't have been less keen to join us and called us a small club.

Of course we went on to sign an unknown called N'Golo Kante and won the league whilst Aranguiz went to Leverkuesen and got injured straight away.  In 2024, Leverkuesen went on to win their first ever title and domestic double.  Aranguiz had left the year before.

Andy Cole

after the return of Kevin Campbell to Arsenal - a 1m free was discussed obviously we wouldn’t pay that

we was offered a young Andy Cole for 600,000 but again seamed to much !

Paulo Wanchope to replace Heskey before O’Neil moved to Celtic.

if I remember rightly the list consisted of Wanchope, Sutton and Hartson. Akinbiyi no where on the radar.

David James had a lot of rumours after Keller moved to Spain. He ended up choosing Villa and we got Flowers (who was great).

Maynard

That was similar to Billy Sharp deal. A deal was accepted by Bristol City for like 1.5mil, Maynard said no claiming he was happy at Bristol City. Then deadline day he signs for West Ham. I dont mind players turning us down but to claim their being loyal and then to join another club is another thing.

I may have been dreaming, but weren't we linked with Dimitar Berbotov at some stage? Silky smooth finisher, who knows how he would have been at that stage of his career for us.:scarf:

I think it was quite a bit more than that. I remember we were after him for a bit with no luck, then we played them at home and he scored twice for them to beat us 2-1 and Sven went mad and bid like 7.5m right after (a lot back then ).

Ousmane Dembele. After winning the league we desperately wanted him. Ranieri even called him up and tried to convince him to join us. Instead he chose Dortmund and went to Barcelona 1 year later for 120M.

Tim Cahill im sure was on our radar when Sven was here. I think his contract was due to end at Everton, Leicester thought we could get on a freebie in the summer but Cahill got offered an year extension. Think Sven signed Neil Danns in his place.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink under Manderic / Martin Allen

That saga cost Allen his job, Allen didn't want him and told Hasselbaink so which scuppered the deal which peed off Manadric who sacked him first thing in the morning. The night after Forest incident which seen a foxes player taken ill.

Emile Heskey nearly rejoined us in 2011. Everything was agreed between Heskey and Sven an emotional return to Leicester, a one year deal with an option of a second if Leicester got promoted. Heskey had a year left on his contract at Villa, he was hoping to agree to cancel the final year to allow him to move to Leicester. Things changed McLeish was named as manager at Villa, Lerner only gave him a small transfer budget which meant things would be tight. McLeish then pretty much begged him to stay as he knew he would be struggling for players, so unless Leicester coughed up a transfer fee... heskey was going nowhere. The summer of 2012 heskey did train with Leicester for the pre season but no deal was offered by Pearson.

He ended up going for 1.5m because his contract was up, but in an interview years later he did say he'd have joined us if he had the chance. Bristol City rejected our bids and they were much more than 1.5m.

I ended up meeting Maynard on a night out circa 2014.I hink when he was at Wigan. We spoke about Leicester but he played everything down. Bound to happen, of course.
