Norfolk.

We have some of the best quality soil in England and we were one of the richest and most densely populated parts of Europe in the middle ages. Norfolk has been malting barley since Roman times and it's still some of the best in the world.

We have 650 complete medieval churches still, more than anywhere else in England and a higher concentration than probably anywhere in the world. They contain thousands of medieval paintings and stained glass that surpass most places in the country. Medieval Norfolk was a cultural centre that produced the first book written in English by a woman and possibly the first autobiography in the English language. Norfolk was the home county of Nelson, the Boleyns, the Howards and the Walpoles. Abraham Lincoln's family originally came from Norfolk and many Americans can trace their ancestry back to the county.

Because Norfolk declined in importance after the industrial revolution, we've been spared a lot of the development that has blighted other parts of England and we still have a lot of countryside that feels quite unexplored and unchanged for hundreds of years. One of the great joys in Norfolk is getting lost down one of the thousands of little country lanes that go nowhere, roads that still follow the medieval paths that connected the many villages that no longer exist. We have a beautiful coastline with England's largest seal colony.

Unsurprising that the royal family choose to spend so much of their time in the county.

Ooooh... soil.

But yes. You're spot on. We go for weekend breaks as it's only a 90 min drive.

Thornham and the area around that coast, peaceful scenic, friendly.

Crabs.

Lived in Hampshire for many years and wouldnt live anywhere else in the uk at this point I think. Has both sections of 2 of the countries biggest and nicest national parks in the South Downs and New Forest if you like nature. 2 medium sized sized cities in Southampton and Portsmouth for stuff to do and jobs as well as one of the countries most beautiful (architecture wise) and oldest and most historic cities in Winchester (I think it’s one of the few counties with 3 cities).

Plenty of islands around the south coast if you like island hopping. Cheaper house prices and rent than Devon, Cornwall, Sussex etc. as south coast countries go too.

If I were to live in a south coast county, all of them appeal. As you rightly point out, prices are unfortunately high in Devon and Cornwall. Having spent a bit of time in East Sussex in the last few years I've found prices more reasonable. I've also heard there are some nice coastal towns in Kent, but I'm not a fan of the rest of the county.

In the Midlands I find Derbyshire has a lot to offer. In the north Cumbria is beautiful, but the weather is somewhat grim at times.

I was thinking more Brighton where house prices are basically London prices but it’s probably reasonable outside of Brighton. Dorset and Kent are nice but I think would be too rural to live for me personally. I think that’s where Hamoshire and Sussex strike the nice balance as they have decently sized cities and towns as well.

As much as I appreciate the culture and people of the north and midlands, once you’ve been gentrified by the south coast, it’s hard to go back :P

Seasonal, but it looks grim.

The commentary says all you need to know about the state of these places.

Nottinghamshire

Hard Disagree

Derbyshire wins hands down if we’re going for another East Mids County

Notts is pretty bland and the countryside pretty average

I live on the edge of the Peak District so won't pick Derbyshire.

If I could pick somewhere else it'd be North Yorkshire.

On a slightly related note. Was looking at English counties with the kids the other day and realised I've never stepped foot in Cumbria.

Been to every other one but not there.

Lots of nice countries.

Derbyshire, North Yorks, Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Devon, Somerset, but probably Cornwall gets my vote.

But away from the big resorts, Norfolk is really nice. Similar to Lincolnshire, lovely county capitals and lots of great market towns.
