Current or future billionaires that you are willingly handing your info would be mad to ‘own’ anything. That’s what offshore trusts are for. If you’re bothered about influencing society, get involved in the democracy that you live in instead of wasting time on social media

hahah ill take that as a no.. lol   Off you toddle

Deleted Twitter, Facebook and insta about a month back and it's the best decision I've ever made.

Mentally damaging all of them.

Facebook used to be useful to find out what you’re friends are doing and find something local to do on a night out by looking at your feed. It’s now just promoted profiles trying to get engagement, I hardly look at it now and only then because of addiction to scrolling.

My twitter account was hacked and  twitter denied it had been and wouldn’t restore it. Not that I used a lot for ages anyway.

Principles without the genuine power to apply them on a meaningful scale are about as much use as a fart in a category five hurricane.

The past few years have shown that very, very clearly.

as with the last bush era and a lot of dictatorships, sticking your head above the parapet with an opinion can actually have serious consequences. Never mind getting a slight whiff of your own fart blown back at you.

In human history it's never been easier to act on principle. We have such a huge choice of where to get our information, where to buy our products, where to live and travel, that we can easily avoid companies or media we believe act immorally. That's why I hate the 'and yet you take part in society' meme. It's a perfectly valid criticism in 2024.

I did find that moving social media apps off the homepage of my phone helped quite a lot. Stopped me just clicking on the things out of habit and mindless browsing the dross on their. I do use it all still, but more often than not with a purpose.

I moved a few days ago.

Looks like Twitter when I joined it about 10 years ago lol

Also, what’s with the weird handle.

Twitter was full of unwanted views, bots, porno content in replies to stuff that was nothing to do with porn,  unwanted ads and, towards the end, lots of Musk appearing on the timeline tweeting "Hmm interesting" in response to posts by users with names like "MagaRussian8764987"  saying weird stuff like  "Maybe the USA should buy Australia and nuke the moon".

Doomscrolling that shit was unhealthy.

I deleted Twitter and went over to Bluesky last month.

Now I just doomscroll FoxesTalk.

For me, Twitter has become borderline unusable from a user experience point of view, and I’ve also decided to consciously stop doomscrolling so much, so Twitter and instagram have gone. I used to love Twitter but it’s just not an enjoyable platform any more.

Threads doesn’t feel like it ever got going.

Whilst it looks nice, it floods my feed with some utter guff.

Twitter could be the next social media platform to go the same way as MySpace.

If we’re honest I think that’s more wishful thinking on your part. The problem with these gimmicks is the idea is Twitter still a great platform but they want more regulation on the people that post akin to the pre Musk Twitter, that overall as a concept just doesn’t work long term really.

Is there not an argument to say that the worst thing for Twitter was for its owner to become part of the government? It automatically becomes perceived as a mouthpiece.

It's equally plausible that the concept of a totally "Wild West" platform as Twitter is now (or Musk idealises it to be) doesn't work long term, too.

I don’t disagree with that, but to be able to displace X’s influence with what is essentially a copy cat isn’t going to work, it’s appealing to a shallow pool of the userbase

I don’t necessarily disagree with that either, it just needs to be a different proof of concept to actual have a decent portion of the database make the switch.

Maybe I’ll prove to be wrong on this but it looks to me a massive migration’s starting to this Blue Sky and it won’t be easily stopped.

Unfortunately it wouldn’t surprise me if Elon Musk tried to do just that through legislation. Ultimately though I don’t think it’s about Blue Sky as such. I just think people are going to abandon TwitterX and Blue Sky is their excuse and alternative port.

Really too early to tell, it’s the flavour of the month of the back of a few high profile defections, similar to threads at the time. But I do stand behind the idea, the concept isn’t strong enough to rival X like that. I think best case scenario it’s a nice little haven for the target demographic.

It’s like anything, a few defections causes a few ripples in the water.

We’ll only get tidal waves if big companies start to defect.

At the moment, Blue Sky looks like it was draw up by a 5 year old with a few Crayola pens.

The fact I don’t appear to be able to add my contacts seems a bit weird. Also, why is Luke Skywalker getting so much love on BlueSky?

Musk is not part of the Government, he is a voluntary appointee to a non-governmental advisory committee thing looking at opportunities to save money.

X will remain the home of free speech and its algorithms unshackled since Jack sold it.  BlueSky looks like a copy version, but unfortunately just an echo chamber for the left/liberals.

That's fine if that's what you want, but when your initial success as a platform is a protest vote, a particular side of the political spectrum, in the long run it won't have a broad enough appeal. At least the more tolerant and dare I say it, grown up Left leaning voices, will remain on X to debate and basically still have the largest social media platform on the planet to say what they want to say.....

...and when that right to free speech is abused, as it so often appears to be?
