Good point re putin - on balance I think he probably would with crimea and those 2 oblasts

i wrote a long winded answer that disappeared when i viewed salisburys post and I cba to do it again.

That's a damn shame, been there before myself so know what you mean.

Speaking personally I think it's rather obvious where behaving like animals (which, when it comes down to it, is what realpolitik is) leads us.

Apologies - you’ve taken that too personally but understand why and I’ve edited it accordingly

at this point in time don’t believe that USA have reneged on their commitments to article 5?

No problem and thanks.

You are right that they haven’t reneged on their commitments to article 5 at this stage, but they have weakened NATO. It’s clear that they want to pivot to the Pacific making me certainly doubt whether they would come to the aid of smaller countries like the Baltics.

You’re  certainly right about the pacific - could be that as part of this ‘sell out deal’ on Ukraine that trump will have made it clear to Putin not to do anything that forces him to make a call on article 5.  Of course taking parts of Moldova wouldn’t do that so Putin could keep himself busy elsewhere.

im wondering about the ‘minerals deal’.  What’s happened with that?  will that actually be used by Ukraine as a real means to underpin real usa support beyond a ceasefire?  Surely trump won’t agree to a ceasefire deal that doesn’t include that being signed??  There are many facets to this negotiation.

on a separate note, could your boys lose at welling on Saturday by three or four ? Would help us !

I believe that Trump administration is compromised given they shamelessly echo Russian messaging. I therefore believe that Putin will continue to push to assimilate the rest of Ukraine in the future, their economy and society is heavily reliant on continuous conflict.

Last I heard Ukraine had effectively signed off on a minerals deal, which gave the US a great deal of control, but yes it does seem to have gone quiet on that front. Whilst the US may want to lift sanctions, I can’t imagine Europe will be keen for very good reasons. I do feel that we are going to regret taking this opportunity to show that aggression does not prevail, but then we have a president who seems determined to smash the rules based order to the detriment of everyone else.

Salisbury have been very inconsistent this season, but losing by 3 or 4 may be a stretch, unless we can get Faes on loan in time :P

India /pakistan ratcheting up diplomatically (and practically if you’re a national living in the other country)

hopefully someone will get involved to calm the situation because we absolutely do not want a war there

from far away it looks like the recent years have shown a methodology of diplomacy around the globe which is way more aggressive than used to be the case

And the timing for such added aggression really couldn't be worse.

Everyone just wants to aggressively wave their cocks irrespective of anything (like even having one)!

Modi does concern me to be honest. Have the Pakistani government condemned the attack? The Kashmir issue (like post empire arrangements) seems like a tricky one to say the least and both sides have become more conservative over the past several decades.

Yes, they have.

A related question: in a democracy where the people choose to elect a religious ethnonationalist to have nuclear release authority, exactly who's fault is it if that nutter then chooses to make a few million (or more) people instantly make an urgent appointment with his deity?

Wrong quote!

Diplomacy via Truth Social is the only way to resolve this IMHO.

People are now banned from taking photos with the Pope lying in state.

I’m not a religious person, however I don’t get waiting in a queue to take a selfie with someone lying in a coffin? All a bit weird.

How often do you get to see a dead Pope though? Apart from fairly regularly.

I’m not sure I’d want to see one to be honest!

You might change your mind in 12 years time (which according to ChatGPT is the modern average)
