Starmer tells us the Government are increasing spending on defence to keep us safe (the first priority of any Government) when we all know that we're more likely to freeze to death, die in an ambulance or get stabbed than killed by Putin.

Sure but the chances of freezing to death dieing in an ambulance or getting stabbed to death will only increase if we all just stand idly by and let Putin roll through Europe. Especially given how much of our bread and grains in Europe come directly from Ukraine and the Balkans and that’s not something to that amount you can just “grow in the uk instead”

Cheers.

"Over 100% increase in plant construction" sounds much more dramatic than "40 power plants in 2021 (at the height of the Covid crisis when not much was being built) to 100 in 2024 but less proposed thereafter", doesn't it?

That being said, that is a really detailed article that covers both strengths and weaknesses of their current strategy well, so appreciate the link, mate.

Don't get me wrong - I don't think that the Chinese current pathway on this one is perfect, or even close to it. However, they rather clearly are putting themselves in a position where they can hit their emission reduction targets and at least have the potential to do so from here by virtue of the sheer amount of renewable tech they have in the pipeline right now, unlike the other big names who really don't appear to have even a tech basis of a plan in place and the resources for it (India, perhaps Russia) or perhaps do and don't give a shit because they're willing to see the future burn for the sake of short term profit (US, perhaps Russia).

Right. Until a vast technological leap forward, the UK, and other places, are going to be dependent on other places in the world for food and for other vital resources.

This is only going to become more of an issue if such resources become more scarce - as they will if action isn't taken.

Traditional nationalism is incompatible with this kind of problem. Barring a cataclysmic population crash, that is.

May be an image of 10 people, car and text that says "UNKNOWN FACTS =MG99TAX) MG99 TAX) 02-WH-37 37 02- THE CEO OF RYANAIR AIRLINES OWNS A SMALL TAXI COMPANY WITH JUST ONE CAB, ALLOWING HIM to LEGALLY DRIVE IN BUS LANES AND BYPASS HEAVY TRAFFIC."

It's actually a very well known fact. He's been doing it for over two decades.

Assuming that Anglea Rayner builds 300k homes per year for the next 15 years and every single one has a heat pump then that will form 13% straight away.

You will probably have to ignore the fact that we won't build that many and hardly any have heat pumps in the above calculation however.

Having read this a thought randomly jumped into my rather jumbled head.

What if countries like Russia see being slow/against tackling climate change as being a long term way of holding the likes of western Europe hostage to provision?

I'm sure that they are adopting or at least considering such a resource-based outlook, another example of this is the Arctic sea routes being ice-free allowing them greater uninhibited access to such resources.

Of course, they, along with everyone else, have horribly miscalculated if they think a plan of their nation/tribe/whatever surviving the changes to come while all else around them crumbles is in any way viable. All they will be is the last to perish, perhaps after a few decades of dystopia.

I think it’s a bit like how the RP accent went from the height of trustworthiness with BBC newsreaders, etc. to being seen as shifty and demeaning. Trump is rude, and his supporters love him for it precisely because he isn’t giving slick, politician, dodge-the-question answers.

I know what you mean and largely agree, but I am not sure repeating your lies in answer to a question isn't pretty much the same thing!

He can’t even take the Donbass after 10 years, why do people think Putin is gonna roll through Europe? And also even if he tried, what would be his incentive? He’s a bad man but he’s not Hitler. He’s just another fool like Brezhnev

As long as it's packaged in a slick, con artist style manner, it is apparently different.

Apparently.

Starmer calls Trump "a friend of the UK".

The man doesn't have friends, Kier. He has sycophants and enemies. I would have thought that analysis of the mindset of the man was obvious by now.

Everything is a deal with the USA’s self interest front and centre. (And of course his too)

his apparent empathy (when it’s offered) is likely just a means to an end

But he’s the most powerful man in the world for the next 4 years so we have to deal with that reality and try to make the downsides as limited as possible and any upsides as positive as they can be.

I still want to see someone actually call his bluff and stick to their position to see what happens.
