How does this team do in the Championship?

If everyone in this squad stays, how do we think this team does in the Championship next season? 

 

I think with this group of players we struggle to make play offs and finish around 9th. There are some strong teams in the league and it's definitely not going to be a walk in the park like last season.

It's impossible to tell. I thought we'd struggle in 2023/24 but whilst we faltered massively down the stretch the gulf in class was evident. Enzo had arrested for a good while this deep routed malaise though so it wouldn't be that surprising if we fell apart at a lower level, we're a mess.

Realistically with the right manager, it could win this seasons championship judging on Burnley and Sheffield United’s seasons. And to be fair that Leeds side on paper should not be that far ahead at the top.

The squad is worse than last season. We need a huge fire sale and a complete rebuild.

We have just sold one of this years championship top scorers and have no striker left as Vardy will not likely be up for another championship season, on top of a heinous recent recruitment history that doesn't suggest we are likely to adequately replace them.

 

We also now have a new raft of disinterested not quite good enough EPL mercenaries in Ayew, Reid, Skipp, Okoli, on top of the rest that we already had and couldn't offload (Soumare, Faes, Daka, whomevers contract isn’t up).

 

We got lucky and failed upwards with Maresca, so unless lightning strikes twice I would expect a drift towards mid table mediocrity, but could realistically get sucked into a Championship relegation battle which almost none of our squad are mentally equipped for.

 

If we get another manager who will follow RVN's lead of stubbornly trusting the ageing veterans Ayew, Reid, etc, I fear for us.

 

If we get the right manager who brings back Alves, Braybrooke, starts putting Nelson, Monga, etc into the match day squad and focusing on maximising our youth setup and the future then we have one last chance to revive like a phoenix from the flames.

 

We don't have a single member of staff at our club that gives me confidence that we will do the intelligent thing though.

The thought that Decordova Reid and Ayew have contracts for next season 😔😔😔. We just don't learn.

With this exact squad in place we will walk to the title again. Top will again think that everything is fine. The reality is, we had 9 straight years in the PL enjoying unprecedented success. As much as this season has been horrific, we still have the core of a very very good championship squad and one that could have been good enough for the PL with just 3-4 good signings. 
 

However, when we go down, Mads will join Chelsea. Bilal will go. N’didi won’t stick around this time. Soumare will also go. Vardy may retire. Facundo’s loan will expire and before you know it we will be left with a much more average championship squad and not much money to spend due to PSR.

 

Oh and there’s every chance we start next year with a points deduction.

If everyone stayed, which is unlikely, but if they did given the huge gap between the championship and the prem it's hard to see the squad not being a play off team.

Mavididi, Fatawu, BEK would tear it up under the right manager. 

 

Of course if we see good players leave, a transfer embargo and a bottom of the barrel manager come in then that all changes. But this squad would be a striker away from being a decent team, the issue is they'd just get battered again in the prem because the gaps too big.

I just thought if was useless, deluded and desperately trying to escape accountability for my failings how would I think we would get out of the Championship - I know, a load of veteran EPL mercenaries will get us back there. 👍
