I actually don’t have a problem with a possession based style it can be really effective and good to watch if it’s also played with intensity, our issue I think is we are quite passive out of possession and when we do get the ball it’s very slow and laboured which means teams have the opportunity to get back into their defensive shape, hence why we struggle to create much.

I think a hybrid of still be able to control and dominate the game whilst also being aggressive in transitions where we can capitalise on overloads etc would be ideal.

I can imagine we'll probably dominate possession in the bulk of Championship games next season as, despite being nowhere near good enough for the Premier League, we'll still have the personnel to spank the weakest and midtable second tier sides.

What I want is aggression and pragmatic tactics against the likes of Southampton, Ipswich, Leeds (if they stay down,) Coventry and Sunderland. Let them have more of the ball, stay tight at the back and hit them on the break with our young and physical players.

I’ll post these graphs again that compare Premier League and Championship playing styles…

More Premier League teams are drifting towards fast & direct, the Championship must follow suit. If fast & direct becomes the norm in the Premier League, you simply can’t appoint the likes of Russell Martin as a long term project. Unless he changes his ways, his style will become obsolete in the Premier League.

As it’s Alan Nixon, despite him getting Ayew right, fingers crossed this is just a boring Sunday bullshit rumour. Part of me thinks Martin will either end up at Rangers or Norwich.

But despite what my head says, another part of the brain thinks he is the most inevitable manager in Leicester history.

Danny Rohl's Sheffield Wednesday has the second most fast and direct football style in the Championship, which makes his apparent connection to us interesting as it would fit with this style.

It's difficult to see him staying at Hillsborough much longer, and he's someone we should at least be having a conversation with.

Saints had a poor last couple of months in their promotion year. He was saved by the play-offs when he got close to the top two and fell away.

He is a bigger tit than his missus has, remember the thread last prior to enzo where he was said to have been a favourite for job and had talks.
Wouldn’t be a huge surprise, given his availability and cost

Thing is he did a very good job at saints, don’t really want him but he is probably in the category of went up too early. They’ve not exactly improved since sacking him either.

Did he though? The strength it depth of the 3 relegated teams at the time they were all favourites

Saints lost a lot of key players, wouldn’t say they strengthened all that well cause they went for the youth model. Leeds were light years ahead of them and for them to have been promoted over them was an achievement

Yep keep trying to say this, but with that data you did it very well.

If we appoint another tippy tappy manager, he might do ok in the championship but then we either do a Southampton after promoted or have to change the system against what the players are used to.  Possession as a primary form of play is out of fashion now.

Would not surprise me one bit if we employ Martin, and then have Rooney at some point in the future as well, Top clearly prefers the style over results.

What's actually wrong with Martin? I would feel very confident he would get us promoted. Beyond that, whoever we choose, it's going to be difficult and it will come more down to recruitment. You'd like to think he's learned from his experience with Southampton too.

I do get the point that we should maybe stick to our roots. I feel Newcastle or Forest play in a way that we would all get behind or can recognise as more of the "Leicester way".

However, Martin isn't some clueless bum.

Perhaps 'older' fans than I want a different style or approach which I do get as well.

Check the Southampton forum.

In short he is obsessed with playing out the back, long intricate play, the same sort of stuff as Enzo.

So it would absolutely bomb in the EPL and need extra talented/expensive players for it.

Also half of his interviews I watched he was blaming everything on the players.

Other than him being a shit manager and an arrogant tosser? He can't organise a defence to save his life and his football is dull as dish water

Anybody justifying us getting Russel Martin need their head testing. The standards at this club are a disgrace and it's little wonder why

May as well just hire ricky Martin

Worse part of the article.

"The Dutchman, 48, is liked by Leicester’s hierarchy but some within the club are already looking at a change"

They should be hounding the useless dick out.

There is no point building a side which plays slow possession football against side who have better players.

You can play good football, but with power and pace.

As I mentioned in this thread last week, possession is all well and good in the Championship, but recent history suggests it’s probably not the right formula in the Premier League, especially when it comes to newly promoted teams.

This was one of our biggest problems this season, despite being tippy tappy last season under Enzo, we were also the most effective team in the Championship for counter attacks, because of course we had Fatawu and Mavididi.

We have gone completely against that element this season by constantly fielding our slowest attackers.

We have to find a manager who can set a team up that is capable of threatening on fast breaks/counter attacks, otherwise we’ll just continue to go round in circles, either yo-yoing between divisions or becoming a mid-table Championship team.
