I don't hate American football but I refuse to believe anyone truly enjoys something that lasts that long for so little action. Really pushing the boundaries of the meaning of the word 'sport'

Others can say the same for modern football. Fake fouls, stoppages, players moaning all the time, fake injuries, sideways and back football in most games.

The fact is that if you like turn based games and care to acquire some decent knowledge about American Football you won't notice at all there's little action.

Also if you're not a hardcore fan of a specific team, Red Zone is one of the best live sports shows. The action is non stop and you don't have to sit down and watch a full single game.

It's really strange American Football isn't more popular in Europe. It's the closest thing to chess in sports. You have the live pieces in certain formations and you need to move 10yrds in 4 moves by passing or running. It's so tactical I can't understand why a lot of people don't like it.

I have a very good knowledge of American football and still think it's insanely drawn out and very often quite dull.

Also if you're saying that a rolling highlights show is better than a full game you're kind of proving my point.

I would say it's precisely this that makes it unpopular

I'm saying that if you find a full game dull you still have the option to watch a live highlights show which ofc will have more action. I don't have a problem watching a full game but as I said I always loved turn based games (sports, board games, videogames).

Maybe because the majority prefer mindless action all the time? I can watch a 3h chess game without getting bored.

True, many of us lack the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate 350 pound men giving each other CTE in 10 second bursts interspersed with 3 hours of adverts.

Could you if they put 2 minutes of adverts on between each move, though? That's the main reason I find American football unwatchable, the intense commercialisation of it all.

Ahaha. Good one! These 350 pound men though are just pawns and part of the tactical game. Do you enjoy watching the crybabies in football? Right now there are 2 down in the Leeds game faking injuries and lying around like they've been hit by a comet.

Oh come on. I know there are a lot of adverts in between but it's not as bad as it is in the Super Bowl.

I dont know what its like in the states but the whole comparison to chess is what a lot of European NFL fans do as a flex to suggest people only dislike NFL because they aren't smart enough to understand it. Off putting snobbery in all honesty.

1. Men’s World Cup Final

2. Super Bowl

The other three aren’t that exciting for me. If thy were happening in my back garden, I’d close the blinds.

I actually quite like it and watch a bit and yes Americans over intellectualize it to an absurd degree. Like it really doesn't take much to remember which lineman to stand in the way of or which direction of the field to run to to catch a pass. Come on now.

World cup final isn't always a great game and the tournament has been ruined to some extent but it's still the true global sporting event. There's really nothing else in the world I think that has its power.

Last two World Cup finals have been 10/10 games tbf.

Because the beautiful game even if flawed is beautiful Because of its simplicity. As for American football Rugby already popular in UK, Ireland and France so don't need something so long winded instead

Hmm. Both sports are simple if you want to keep it simple as a spectator. You don't need to dive deep into playbooks if you just want to watch American Football and the same applies to football tactics.

We moan about stoppages in football but nothing compared to American Football and the time it takes to play a match. Perhaps it is live chess but chess is not a great spectator sport either despite the cerebral input

I would probably enjoy watching the Ryder Cup if it was accessible. I don't do Sky anymore and golf on the radio is rubbish, a bit like swimming or Wimbledon.

Used to love watching test match cricket on TV but again, it's only on Sky. That said TMS is still decent.

Stolen from The Overlap last week

1. Ryder Cup

2. Super Bowl

3. Tour De France

4. World Cup Final

5. The Ashes

Mine is

1. Ryder Cup

2. The Ashes

3. WC Final

4. Super Bowl

5. TDF

Possible recency bias at the top of my order there, which may well change come December

My logic though, is that from the first tee shot to the last putt and everything in between really matters.

I genuinely had to Google the last WC Final result, likewise the one before. You’re never guaranteed an exciting, free scoring game, although they can often turn out to be.

Equally, if The Ashes ended up with every Test being like Stokes at Headingley, then I think it would be the most exciting sport in the world.

Go for it

For me it would be;

1. World Cup Final.

2. The Ashes.

3. Ryder Cup.

4. Superbowl.

5. Tour De France.

Quite a large gap between 3rd and 4th and I can honestly say i've never watched a single second of the Tour De France.

I think a lot of people’s perception of the NFL would change if they went to a game. Certainly doesn’t feel as long winded as when you’re watching it on the tv. That’s what got me into it.
